My original CDI box had two issues both intermittent. The first problem…I couldn’t shut the engine off. My second problem was the engine would cutout thus a loss of power. BTW, when I apply pressure with my finger to a particular point on the CDI unit both of the previous problems go away. I ordered a new Hotshot CDI box and installed the unit. I eliminated my two original problems but now I’m dealing with two new issues. The only way my engine will fire over is by using the pull rope. By using the starter switch the engine will not start. My second problem is the engine will die when shifte

I suspect you have a wire crossed and it might not be your fault. You might want to research the pin/wire locations. can’t help you with the reverse part because I have no idea what it is you’re working on

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If your engine is not sparking, it may be due to a problem with the CDI box. However, other potential causes of no spark include issues with the ignition coil, spark plug, or wiring.
Symptoms could include misfiring, dead cylinders, backfiring, bizarre tach behavior, and countless other things related to how your engine`s running. The problem may get worse as the bike warms up. It might not even hold low revs at all.
If your motorcycle engine uses a CDI unit it is responsible for to giving the spark at the plug/s. If the CDI unit is faulty you can get a weak or intermittent spark or no spark at all. This translates to poor running or no running at all. Many motorcycles from the past ran without a CDI.
Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a rare and treatable condition in which your body doesn`t have enough antidiuretic hormone, which leads to extreme water loss through your urine. Most cases of CDI are due to damage to your hypothalamus or pituitary gland.
The ESC module is one of the components that directly controls engine spark, so if it fails, it can leave the vehicle without spark. A vehicle without spark may still crank, but will not be able to start or run.
If the ignition control module has failed altogether, it`ll create a weak spark, and the car won`t start. Check to see if the switch and terminals are free from rust and replace any damaged or broken spark plugs wires as necessary. Alternatively, it could be a bad ignition module.
Essentially, a CDI box controls a motorcycle`s ignition system by starting the ignition and combustion process. A pulse of voltage from the motorcycle battery passes through the CDI box to fire up the spark plug.
So, if your mechanic has a “better” CDI, it either doesn`t actively limit the max. RPM, or it has a better timing at higher RPM, allowing more power output and hence top speed.
The CDI must be matched to the engine that`s being worked on. In addition, the electrical aspects of the system such as the resistance and voltage of the pickup and source coils also vary widely, which will likely exacerbate problems from mis-matched CDIs, or make them not work at all.
as long as you stay with ac or dc (depending on what the cdi needs/your stator output) and the trigger type is similar, you can pretty much make anything work. if you can figure out the pinout of the cdi you (in theory) could swap a $10 chinese cdi into it. look around for other models with similar timing…
Often a faulty CDI unit will see intermittent or no spark on cylinders and may only breakdown when your engine warms up. Receiving voltage from the CDI unit the coil will amplify voltage and shoot it through to the spark plug. Faulty or damaged coils will have weak or no output.
If no spark appears, check for broken wires, shorts, grounds or a defective stop switch. Once you have confirmed that the stop switch is working, reconnect the spark plug lead.
If the ignition relay shorts, burns out, or otherwise fails while the engine is operating it will cut off power to the fuel pump and ignition system. This will cause the vehicle to immediately stall due to fuel and spark being cut off.
Inductive Ignition versus CDI Systems

Inductive ignition systems produce a spark, at a lower voltage with a longer duration compared to capacitor discharge ignition systems. A CDI, Capacitor Discharge Ignition system is charging constantly and sends a large voltage charge (380–450 V) to the coil.

The DC-CDI module is powered by the battery, and therefore an additional DC/AC inverter circuit is included in the CDI module to raise the 12 V DC to 400-600 V DC, making the CDI module slightly larger.
Your CDI has two plugs, a 4-pin and a 2-pin. The 4-pin side may have 3 or 4 wires connected to it (both AC and DC versions). If the 2-pin connector has only 1 wire going to it, it`s a DC CDI. If there are 2 wires attached to the 2-pin connector, then it`s an AC CDI.
To test your CDI box, you disconnect it from your bike, use the positive and negative leads of your multimeter to check for continuity, and listen for a beeping sound which signals that it is faulty.
A failing points and condenser system can cause rough running, misfires, lean and rich conditions. If the engine is difficult to start, and runs rough once it does start, then it is time to contact a mechanic to have a look at the system and find out exactly what the problem is.
Loss of spark is caused by anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. This includes worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad plug wires or a cracked distributor cap.
For less calorific value we do not get more horse power. But diesel have more heat developed during combustion thus developing more power than petrol engines. Thus there is no need of Sparking the air- fuel mixture in the diesel engine.

Clogged Fuel Injectors

If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.

Engine dies if i engage blades or take my foot off the brake
ANSWER : You likely need to replace the brake switch, the seat switch can also cause the same problem. Most likely problem is the seat switch,i would try that first. The pto or the reverse switch can cause a shut down but not until you try to mow, seat switch is the most suspect.

I have a John Deere X360 lawn tractor. I am just getting it out and going over everything to make sure it is good to run. I put fresh gas in the tank, and changed oil before I even tried to start it. When I first went to start it, the tractor would only crank. So then I changed spark plugs. Still would not start. Then I took spark plug out and cranked engine. I did not have much of a spark. I unpluged one wire that went to the what looks like a coil pack, (there are two of them) and engine fired right up. If I try to run engine with both wires to the coil plugged in, the engine will shut off. I decided to unhook both wires. Now mower will not engage. Are these problems connected or do I have two separte problems? The mower is 2 years old and only has 30 hours on the engine. Is mabe the key switch bad or the mower switch bad? Any help would be greatful.

Thanks

Battery the battery is dying and it will start but, after a few mins the engine starts to sputter then goes back to idle and eventually dies. could this just be the dead battery? is that the reason the engine dies?
ANSWER : Usually, if the battery is dying, it won’t start up again.
Usually, motorized vehicles only use the battery to start the engine, then the alternator contributes all the power for actual operation.
A dead alternator or battery shouldn’t ‘sputter’, they would just stop dead.

If the engine will start, run and then sputter…there is a fuel problem.
1. There may be a ‘cut-off’ in the fuel line which is in the off postion. It may look like a thin, flat wing-nut.
2. The gas may be contaminated with water residue if the gasoline has been sitting a long time. I believe you can get some water treatment to fix this without having to dump the fuel tank contents.
3. The fuel line is blocked with dirt somewhere, I would check the fuel filter and work backwards from there.

I have a briggs and strattan 18 horsepower engine on my craftsman mower and it wont start, i replaced the starter and it still wont start! It wont even turn over, in fact it binds the starter, but if I take the spark plug out and try to start it, the starter engages and turns the motor over just fine but of course it wont start cause the spark plug is out! Whats the problem?
ANSWER : Set intake valves @ .004 and exhuats @ .006 with piston a 1/4 inch downstroke from TDC.It sounds like the ACR {automatic compression release}is not working do to valves having to much lash.
