My husband is using a chainsaw or trying too. I know nothing about this so bare with me. When he pulls the handle thingy to start it, it will start and hold for about 5 seconds max, than cut off. It almost sounds like a car flooding with gas. It is full of gas. It also looks like when it goes to recoil, it punches the handle back out and thats when it dies. i know thats not very helpfull but any ideas?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Every year the spark plug must be replaced on chainsaws for the best performance.

So your current plug is probably fouled or has an incorrect gap from last years use.

Record your chainsaw’s make and model number then go to your local large hardware store and to the lawn area, they will have a replacement spark plug. And if you don’t have a ratcheting socket wrench set with spark plug removal socket, this is a great time to get one. the size will be 5/8 inch.

Always use Safety glasses and ear protection.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

One of the most common problems, especially because rototillers often sit unused for months, is stale fuel or a clogged carburetor. If you know you have fresh fuel, you can check for carburetor blockage by spraying a small amount of carb cleaner into the intake and attempting to start the engine.
Mantis Tiller/Cultivator. This lightweight, compact, and versatile small tiller does the work of tillers twice its size, tearing through the hardest soil in minutes. This tough little tiller has been empowering gardeners around the world since 1980.
Professional rototiller repair costs an average of around $60 per hour. However, some shops charge a minimum amount for small repairs. The average total cost to recondition a rototiller is between $200 and $300, depending on its condition.
Should You Wet the Ground Before Tilling? If the garden soil that you are planning on tilling is too dry, you should consider adding water to it before you till. Less is usually more, but water to a depth of about 4 inches. Let the water penetrate the soil before you begin the tilling process.
Tiller: Why won`t my tillers wheels or tines turn? A broken drive belt, bad transmission or problem with the clutch cable can prevent a tiller`s wheels and tines from turning. Check the drive belt and replace it if it`s worn or broken.
You should change your tiller oil at least every spring, but ideally after every 50 hours of operation. Between oil changes, check your oil level before each use to ensure there`s enough oil present. Small amounts of oil may burn off during use, so you may need to occasionally top it off.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Using an undersized cord, a larger number cord gauge (AWG) than recommended in the chart, will cause a loss in power and overheating of the tiller.
Soil must only be loosened a couple of inches deep when you cultivate. If you cultivate too deeply you will only encourage the surface to dry out faster. Tilling is actually a form of deep cultivation that is necessary when preparing a new garden bed or when adding large amounts of organic material.
Often considered a beneficial insect, praying mantids are actually “generalists” (i.e., willing to eat a variety of things) that prey on both bothersome insects and beneficial ones. A carnivore, mantids dine primarily on insects like flies, crickets, moths, grasshoppers, and mosquitoes.
Put simply, a garden tiller is designed to break up hard, compact soil into loose, broken-up dirt that can then be used for planting.
It`s not a good idea to use a tiller immediately before planting. This is because tilling introduces many air pockets into the soil which can result in less than ideal seed germination.
Disadvantages of Power tiller tractors:

Power tiller Tractors are more expensive and less efficient than traditional tractors. They also have a shorter lifespan.

Alternatively you can till hard ground with a rotary tiller, which is especially useful for medium-large plots. Use a rotary tiller of suitable weight so that it is stable and the blades penetrate deep into the soil.
For a tiller with a bladed wheel, push the tiller forward while it`s in the ground. This will rotate the blades and till the soil. For a tiller without the wheel, twist the tiller as you pull it straight out of the ground.
Can a tiller cut through roots? Tillers can cut through smaller roots without much problem. The maximum size of roots that the machine can cut through depends on the tiller`s size and power, as well as the blades` size. However, running into overly large roots can stop, or even damage your tiller.
A powered tiller or cultivator will make removing grass or sod easier. While purchasing power equipment will add to your total cost, choosing the right tool may save you time and labor.
What lubricant should be used in the tiller transmission case? In the past the rule was: For partial fill-ups (a few ounces or less) use SAE 140, SAE 85W-140 or SAE 80W-90 weight gear oil with an API rating of GL-4 or GL-5. For full replacement use SAE 140 or SAE 85W-140 gear oil with an API rating of GL-4 only.
All Troy-Bilt tillers are shipped without oil in the engine, so the first thing you must do before starting and using your new tiller is add oil and fill the fuel tank. The engines in these tillers run on unleaded gasoline. Oil is added separately and is not mixed with the fuel.
Whereas, reverse rotation tillers are heavy-duty tillers perfect for large-scale jobs. They are more effective in preparing seedbeds for planting, burying large clods of dirt as you go so you don`t have to take multiple passes to get the desired results.
If the rotary tiller still doesn`t start:

Check that the fuel tank isn`t empty: if necessary, add fuel. The fuel must be fresh, of good quality and clean: make sure that no dirt, water or incompatible fuel (such as petrol-oil mixture, if the engine is a 4-stroke) gets into the tank.

The carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the engine for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.

My mower will start but won't stay running – Toro LX466 22HP Lawn Tractor 13RT61RH244
ANSWER : I am going to respond 2 times to this post. The first reply will be generic things to check.
First off check the oil level and make sure it is serviced to full.
If your having a lack of fuel (runing lean) you will need to check fuel flow at the carb fuel mainfold. It should fill a spray paint can lid in less than 10 seconds but teting flow rated of the main fuel line. If you have poor flow here… you need to check the fuel filter and the fuel tank outlet port for obstructions.

Good Fuel flow still shutting off…. remove the carb float bow and clean the debris from the bow’ and the treaded area where the fuel solenoid mounts Additionally you will have to again remove the main fuel line and spray carb cleaner in the float needle area to flush out any debris through the fuel hose connection.

For the second response I need to know which engine is installed on your mower by MODEL number if you can locate it. (there are 3 engines) At least try to find the engine model number. If you can not locate it Brand and HP of the engine (I assume 22 hp) Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Where is the primer ball
ANSWER : It may not have a primer ball. If it does, it would be attached to the carberator. If it starts, but won’t stay running, that could mean your carberator needs to be cleaned/serviced.

My mower is about 2 months old. Haven’t had any issues until last night. I think I ran out of gas (maybe not, it was getting dark). I filled it up, and won’t stay running. Barely starts unless it is tilted way back (like handle on the ground all the way back), then it runs like a champ. If it is level, it will barely run until it dies. This is on concrete, and there is nothing underneath.
ANSWER : Hello,It sounds like there is sediment in the carb bowl. Remove the gas line from the carb and plug the line with a phillips head screwdriver. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the bowl and carefully tap on the bowl to loosen it without damaging the rubber gasket. Clean the bowl, and blow the ports in the bolt out. Raise and lower the float inside the bowl space to make sure that it is working freely. Re-assemble making sure to seat the rubber gasket properly. If there is sediment in the bowl, you might also consider an inexpensive in-line gas filter ($6 at Lowe’s, etc.).Best regards,–W/D–

Serviced my riding lawnmower runs great. but when I put in drive it dies out. Also when I engage blades it dies out. No problems last summer. It won,t stay running when I do these two steps
ANSWER : Probably the seat safety switch. If it’s not activated (from your weight on the seat) the engine is killed when you put it in gear, or engage the blades. Lift up the seat and check the switch – wires on tight? switch tightly mounted? You can take the switch out and tape it in the pushed-in position to test things. If that doesn’t let the mower run, the switch itself is probably bad, but it could also be a connector that knocked loose when you serviced the mower. Check wires and connectors. Good luck!
