This engine may well have seized, remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston skirt through the open exhaust port, any signs of scuffing and the machine will have to come apart to assess the damage.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the leaf blower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
There may be old fuel in the tank.
Leftover fuel in your leaf blower is one of the primary reasons a leaf blower won`t start. Gas left in the tank for 30 days or more can deteriorate, causing the engine to stall or not start properly. If left for 6 months or more, the gasoline can turn into a thick sludge.
Check the spark plug
If your leaf blower runs on petrol and won`t start, the spark plug might be faulty. Typically it needs to be changed every year but can be done sooner with high usage. Start by unclipping and giving it a clean using plug-specific cleaner and a wire brush.
A fuel-rich mixture can cause the engine to smoke. Clean the air filter and perform preventive maintenance on the leaf blower to help prevent engine smoking. Clogged jets inside the carburetor also cause excessive smoking because the carburetor can`t mix the right amount of air with fuel.
Either it`s not getting electrical power or, more likely, the motor itself has simply burned out. A blower motor in an older vehicle is likely to burn out over time, and may need replacement.
The fuel isn`t one of your leaf blower`s mechanical parts, but it`s an important part to consider. Not only does fuel quality start to degrade after 30 days; fuel left to sit longer than that can damage the blowers tank and fuel lines.
They are ignition protected to prevent sparks, and are built to resist overheating and corrosion. The size blower you need is determined by the volume of your engine compartment. It is recommended that you use a blower at least 4 minutes before you ever start the engine, and especially after fueling.
The location of the reset button will depend on the model of your furnace, but it can typically be found on the side of the blower motor inside the blower compartment. Once you locate the reset button, press and hold it for 30 seconds. Then, release the button and wait for 30 seconds.
It won`t go endlessly on one charge; about 15 to 20 minutes is reasonable – if you need a blower that runs longer, get a corded or gas-powered model. And it won`t demolish that huge pile of wet leaves on your lawn – but it works well with lighter debris on hard surfaces.

If the hum occurs when the motor is on but not turning, the capacitor may be damaged and, if so, should be replaced. This could result from a poor quality capacitor or a blocked filter. Humming when the blower is off usually indicates that the pilot light needs to be readjusted to the appropriate level.

Poulan blower was running – ran out of gas – put gas in – won’t start- primed – won’t start – let sit – won’t start-took cover off – sprayed starter fluid in carb – won’t start- -(very little stutter) won’t start-set overnight – repea -twon’t start-wits end !!!
ANSWER : Hello
Does it use a fuel and oil mixture? You probably did that.
Try removing the spark plug and cleaning it with a wire brush or some emery cloth.Make sure you have spark by connecting the plug wire and resting the plug on the metal motor block.
Do not hold the plug in your hand ,if you have no spark you may have a bad magneto.
I have a pb-251. replaced carb, air filter, hoses, spark plug and cleaned spark arrestor. start easily. runs fine for 2 minutes and then stalls if I give it the gas but will idle all day long.
ANSWER : Loosen gas cap. Probably a bad Vent in the gas cap
I have a Ryobi RHT 2660DA Hedge trimmer that will not start. I have tried the following things;
1. Replacing the spark plug. There is a good spark on both the old and new plug.
2. Adjusted the carburetor as suggested.
3. Put a teaspoon of fuel into the spark plug hole directly. Does not even try.
4. Tried easy start in the spark plug hole directly and into carburetor. No joy.
5. Took off carburetor and cleaned a suggested. No joy.
6. Replaced the available diaphragms (4 in all). No joy.
7. Replace carburetor with a new one. Same result.
8. Checked compression which was only about 50 per square inch.
9. Checked tightness of crankcase screws. All tight.
10. Replace crankcase gasket. Still same compression result. Again no joy.
11. This machine is about 5 years old but only used about 5 or 6 times so should not be a wear problem.
12. Replace mixture (did this early on in the sequence)
13. Took off exhaust which was full of fluid. Cleaned and dried, but to no avail.
14. Stripped unit down as I started to believe this was a timing or compression problems, but I cannot get the bottom clutch unit off (do not know how to remove it as it looks like an interference fit on the shaft. As a result I cannot get to the flywheel to see whether the key way or key has sheared or the timing has somehow moved.
I am now at a lost of a way forward. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. At the moment I am left with what is an expensive piece of junk.
I have Featherlite 1500 leaf blower. It stopped running. Cleaned carburetor, no start, cleaned spark arr ester, no start, will not start with starter fluid, does have spark and compression. It will not start and has no spark. I pulled the plug and let it hang and had no spark. I did the same thing with a spark plug and still no change. Can anyone help me
ANSWER : First of all- your methods of testing spark are … unsatisfactory.
You need a spark tester and a good unit ground to determine the condition of the module.
For preliminary tests the spark plug needs to be grounded. Insert the plug into the spark plug boot and make sure there is a good connection and make sure the plug is grounded by touching the threaded part of the spark plug to a solid engine component. Usually the cooling fins of the cylinder or head. Once the plug is grounded proplerly then pull the rope and check for fire.
Once you are satisfied that there is no spark then unplug the ground wire from the module and check for spark again. If you have spark then its a switch or bad wire problem. If still no spark then replace the module.
Ran last year, won’t start this year. Changed fuel and replaced spark plug. Checked spark and attempted to start with battery and tried with pull cord but no start. pulled plug and it had fuel on it so i cleaned it let it sit an hour and tried again, no start. any suggestions?
ANSWER : It might have tipped over on its side. Look at the air filter, if you see oil or gas on the filter then you might have to remove and clean the carburetor. I would start by cleaning/replacing the air filter and trying it again. If its getting fuel and the spark plug works then the only other side of the fire triangle is air.
