Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The carburetor is in need of a good cleaning, and replace the needle and seat. they are cheap. tillers sit for long periods of time and the fuel goes bad. drain and replace the fuel make sure fuel lines are good. the fuel filter is good. wash and be sure air filter is good. if this dont fix the problem you will have to clean the carburetor. there are a lot of videos on you tube that show how to do this. good luck.

Details. Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.
The carburetor gasket prevents excess air from entering the engine. If this gasket is damaged, it can result in an engine that only runs with the choke on.
When does the bike run only with a choke? This mainly happens when there is dirt in and around the parts of the carburetor. The areas of concern here include fuel lines, petcock, pilot jets, or fuel filters. The dirt blocks the fuel passage and it cannot reach the carburetor properly.
A choke valve/cable is designed to restrict the flow of air in the carburettor of an engine. This helps enrich the fuel-air mixture, improving the ability to start an engine in low temperature conditions.
Turn on the ignition of your car. Once the engine is warm, you can remove the air filter and check whether the choke is open or closed. At this point, the choke should be open to allow the engine to breathe fully.
It will not damage the engine at all. All that will happen is that it will run richer, thus using more fuel. If you did it for thousands of miles you`d probably end up with more deposits in the engine/exhaust, but even that is easy to sort.
Chokes are designed to close off or “choke” the air supply in order to provide the proper ratio of fuel to air. An engine needs more air as it warms up, so the choke needs to open to allow more air.
Why Does Your Lawn Mower Only Run With Choke On? Your lawn mower only runs with choke on because of a problem with the engine fuel-air mixture system, which can be caused by the carburetor, bad fuel, or air leaks. The choke compels more fuel in the combustion chamber to help the engine to turn over when cold.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
The choke usually “chokes” the air supply into the engine so it gets more petrol than usual. Hence it`s name. You should start the bike from cold with half or full choke depending on how cold it is. After 30 seconds is usually enough for most bikes.
In fact, choke will usually subside on its own.
Choking is when a person can`t speak, cough, or breathe because something is blocking (obstructing) the airway. No air can get through. If the airway stays blocked, it can lead to a loss of consciousness and death.
Compression of both (one on either side of the neck) carotid arteries for eight-to-10 seconds is likely to render a person unconscious. It takes several minutes of lack of blood flow to the brain (somewhere in the range of four-to-six minutes) before permanent damage to the brain is likely to occur.
If they are still choking, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts: hold around the waist and pull inwards and upwards above their belly button. Abdominal thrusts squeeze the air out of the lungs and may dislodge the blockage.
The purpose of the choke is to deliver an enriched air-fuel mixture into the cold engine to help it start. Having a rich air to fuel ratio flowing into the cold engine helps it start when cold. By having more fuel flowing into the cylinder, there is a higher chance of ignition.
Modern cars are fuel injected, so they don`t have chokes. Small engines are, mostly, still carbureted, so they still need chokes. Fuel injected cars don`t need to be “choked,” because the computer adjusts the amount of fuel automatically. When the engine is cold, more fuel is injected.
Even if the person does not lose consciousness, strokes and permanent brain damage, including cognitive impairment, can result from a chokehold. People with cardiovascular disease are especially susceptible to brain injury as a result of neck compression. In a paper published in 2020 in JAMA Neurology, Dr.
Problems with a Choke

The most common issue that shows up with the choke system is flooding. If the engine is successfully started, leaving it at full choke for only a few seconds can cause too much fuel to enter into the combustion chamber. This will then cause the the engine to lock up and stall.

We do not recommend that any type of outdoor power equipment be operated after initial warm-up and with the choke control outside of the normal run position for longer than 5 minutes. Some engines utilize a manual fuel primer bulb to enrich the ratio of fuel in the fuel air mixture for initial engine starting.
If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.
A snowblower that runs better on half choke likely suffers from a dirty or faulty carburetor. Cleaning or replacing the carburetor will fix the issue.

Have to run on half choke, just stops if i turn it off.fuel is 25 to 1. thanks alan.
ANSWER : More than likely a small passage way in the carb is clogged. You can try some carb cleaner, but you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it out. Be advised that these passageways are sometimes as fine as a human hair, and almost impossible to clear sometimes. A new carb may be required if it is worth it to you. Sorry.

Blower only runs with full choke. When I switch to half choke, it dies and won’t start.
ANSWER : It may simply need the high speed jet opening up a bit (2 screws near eachother on the carb and the high speed is furthest from the engine)failing that it needs a carb kit…. this is a serviceable item changed regularly.
