While the step order can differ slightly between manufacturers, they all follow the same basic procedure. To start your riding lawn mower, engage the brakes, shift the gear to neutral, open the throttle, turn the ignition, and then fix any issues preventing the mower from working properly.
If your John Deere won`t crank and all you hear are clicking sounds when you turn the key, you likely have a bad battery or a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter. Double check that the alternator and battery connections are clean and tight.

The short answer is yes, you can use 20w50 oil in a lawnmower but results may vary. That`s not the end of it though. This kind of oil is not designed specifically to be used in a lawnmower. 20W50 is actually a fairly specialized petrol engine oil formulated for use in engines made generally before 1980.
The serial number of a John Deere tractor can, however, be used to determine its year. The 10-character year symbol is included in the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) used by John Deere to identify vehicles. The year of manufacture of your tractor is stated in the VIN`s tenth character.
The 420 was built from 1956-`58 and, in addition to sporting a bold, new green-and-yellow paint scheme, it boasted redesigned cylinder heads that made its engine more fuel efficient and powerful.

HAVE A JOHN DEERE 318 LAWN TRACTOR, CHANGED POINTS AND CONDENSER, WON’T TURN OVER, TRIED STARTING FLUID IN CARB AND NOTHING. CAN IT BE THE COIL AND HOW DO I CHECK? THANKS
ANSWER : Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
