If the engine will not crank, you likely have a problem with… Discharged / defective battery or faulty electrical connections. To address these issues, check the battery and charging system for problems. Faulty parts: potentially the safety interlocks, starter motor switch (open circuit) or solenoid.
You could have a clogged fuel cap, which can prevent air from entering the gas tank. Loosen the gas cap a little and start the tiller again. If it starts and stays running, try cleaning or replacing the gas cap. A clogged carburetor could also be the problem.
The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
Tiller: Why won`t my tillers wheels or tines turn? A broken drive belt, bad transmission or problem with the clutch cable can prevent a tiller`s wheels and tines from turning. Check the drive belt and replace it if it`s worn or broken.
If the wheels on your tiller move but the tines don`t spin, you may need to replace tine shaft clevis pins or replace the transmission. The tiller`s transmission drives the wheels and the tine shaft, so you`ll likely need to replace the transmission when the wheels spin but the tine shaft doesn`t move.
You should change your tiller oil at least every spring, but ideally after every 50 hours of operation. Between oil changes, check your oil level before each use to ensure there`s enough oil present. Small amounts of oil may burn off during use, so you may need to occasionally top it off.
The starter relay makes a clicking sound, but the engine does not rotate, which indicates that the starter motor is not receiving enough current from the relay. This may also be a sign of low or exhausted battery power. Only when it transmits enough current to the starter, the relay starts to work.
Starter motor issues can manifest as a single, loud click emanating from the starter relay or starter solenoid. Usually, this points to a faulty relay or solenoid, or a bad or jammed starter motor.

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim

Sarter will not turn engine over
ANSWER : Two things cause this…a bad starter or weak battery…not sufficient Amps will not allow enough power to the starter to spin it fast enough to start the engine….a bad starter simply cannot use the power supplied it to turn the engine properly. Have some one do a load test on the battery..tests the battery simulating starting the engine. If ok it is the starter if not replace the battery..good luck.

Key start turns and makes a whining “I sort of want to start” noise but does not engage the engine. Previously the key start was sort of touchy and the key had to in just the right position to engage the starter. Could this be a starter motor problem? If so what is the part/fix?
ANSWER : If it is whining, the starter motor is turning. You possibly may have a broken starter drive. This is the little gear on the starter shaft. It’s not too expensive and relatively easy to replace.

Need to replace 9n tractor starter when you turn ignition key the starter just keeps going around.
