How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
When using the bagging feature on rear bag mowers you must remove the mulch plate from the back of the mower. If the mulch plate is still inserted then the grass will not be able to go into the bag.
Why doesn`t my lawn tractor discharge grass properly? The underlying cause for improper grass discharge is lack of airflow through the deck. WET GRASS: Wet grass is heavy and the available air flow from a properly functioning mower is not sufficient to throw the wet clippings out of the deck.
Because when grass gets too long, your mower is forced to chop off way more than a ⅓ of each grass plant. This in turn will result in a clumping nightmare. That`s why we recommend you set the mower deck to around 3 and ½ inches and mow more often. Never remove more than one-third of the blades length at a time.
Up to 25 percent of your lawn`s total fertilizer needs are supplied by clippings left on the lawn. Clippings contain 80 to 85 percent water and decompose quickly. MU research shows clippings do not contribute to thatch problems. Average mowing time can be reduced by 30 percent when grass clippings are not bagged.
Poor soil that is hard and compacted is often the problem when it comes to growing a great lawn. When soil is too alkaline and compacted, air, water and nutrients cannot get down to the roots, and the grass will not grow properly. Lawns thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil with pH levels between 6.2 and 7.0.
A dull blade is the number one reason for leaving uncut grass. The blunt blade will damage your lawn in no time at all; it tears the grass and leaves a jagged edge which turns the grass tips yellow. The recommended way to repair the yellow grass damage – regularly cut with a sharp lawnmower blade.
The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable. For this reason, some people prefer to mow at 3 or 3.5 inches.
While there are several reasons this might happen, it is most commonly the result of an uneven deck or misaligned blades. Make sure the blades are facing the correct direction and are not warped. Check the mower spindle and repair it if necessary. Check if the deck is level and if not repair or replace it.
A dull blade can make your lawn appear yellow, brown and raggedy. A dull lawnmower blade may even pull up portions of the grass because it actually pulls on the entire plant instead of slicing through the blades of grass cleanly.
It is an excellent lawn mower cleaner. A simple spray of WD-40, like a lawnmower cleaner on the blades and the housing, will keep the grass from sticking to it. It will also keep the housing and blades free from rust.
Why is my lawn soft and spongy? A good amount of growth in the previous years can lead to some build-up of surplus lawn runners in your turf. These runners eventually die and more grass tries to grow on top of it, however, this can restrict the amount of both oxygen and water getting to the roots of the plant.
Don`t bag or mulch
This helps prevent contamination due to the wet grass. After mowing, make sure you clean under the mower deck and the blade to prevent clumps or clippings from sticking and causing mold down the line.
Properly stored unopened grass seed can last up to five years. Properly stored open grass seed can last up to 18 months.
Heavy mowers will start to sink into the grass and whip up moisture as they cut your grass, which causes grass to clump in matted wet wads that clog the deck of your mower and its catcher.
An African proverb goes, “Grass does not grow faster if you pull it”. Trying to make grass grow by pulling its blades kills the grass. First, the blade extends a little, especially if it is fresh grass, but by pulling a little harder, it tears off.

I just got a grass hog trimmer that used to belong to my sister. The line is not feeding and I don’t know how to restring.
The cap on the bottom pops off, and there is a spool in there. Sometimes the line melts to itself in spots and you just have to free it and if you feel you need to then you can cut some off.I hope this helps you out.
We have the Black & Decker Grass Hog xp 7.2 Amp 14″AFS. I lost the manual for it and need to know how to thread the spool.

String problem I am having a problem with my B&D Grass Hog weedeater and edger. The string will not advance. Please give suggestions on how to fix this problem. Just to inform you, I am woman, so your instructions may need to be made rather simply. LOL Thank you in advance for your assistance and I look forward to your answer as the grass is getting rather deep. Donna
Donna, take the spool that holds the string off. Look to see which wat the string is supposed to be wound onto the spool. If the string in on correctly, check to see if one or more of the turns of the string is overlaying itself. If there is overlap, clear it out by unwinding enough to unlap it. If the string is going the wrong way when you check it, remove and save the string from the spool, rewind it in the correct direction, put it back onto the machine and see if that corrects the problem. Woman or not, you are smart enough to ask, you are smart enough…Good luck…Lee
