It starts with carb cleaner but dies instantly
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Hello sir, my machine will only start when pumping primmer bulb or squirting fluid in the carburetor than stops. the fuel line has broken off, in most small carburetors this is a ongoing problem.old fuel will crystallize when left in tank for a long time.plugging up ports, fuel lines, small screen in carburetor.fuel lines will dissolve clogging carb.this is why it will run when the choke is on creating a vacuum to where there is fuel forced in the carb to rum, also the gas will evaporate leaving the oil behind clogging up carb.the thing to do is remove carb. and clean out, replacing gaskets or fuel line if necessary.use carb cleaner to clean out carb.make sure to make note where fuel line go.the fuel filter broke off of fuel line letting debris get in carb plugging it up.the muffler is known to clog up a lot on these machines where they want run. the compression should be 60 to 120 lbs any thing below 60 is junk. when adjusting the carb screws turn in all the way than turnout 1 1/4 turns turn in slow until machine runs also you need to check for spark by removing plug and grounding against engine to check spark, ok.a new spark plug would be a good ideal too , if you are going to make these repairs use new fuel line and filter, hope this helps, any comments welcome, thank you, ~~

The recommended 50-to-1 fuel mixture includes 2.6 ounces of a high-quality, two-cycle oil with added fuel stabilizers and 1 gallon of unleaded 87-octane gas. Homelite recommends using their brand of oils, specifically designed to work in any model with a 50-to-1 fuel ratio.
In 1946, Homelite manufactured its first chainsaw, an electrical model, and in 1949, released another power-equipment innovation in the form of the first chainsaw that featured one-man operation (previous saws were generally too large and bulky to be operated by a single individual).
Engine. The engine in the Homelite XL Chain Saw displaces 58.2 cc and has one cylinder.
For optimum fuel economy 16-17:1 is usually best, leaner than that and the car will begin to misfire. Maximum power is usually found between 12-14:1, but this may be too lean for safety on many engines. For maximum reliability at full power, air fuel ratios from 10.5-12.5:1 are considered best, depending on the engine.

Carburator adjustment for Homelite xl 12 chain saw
ANSWER : Turn both screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out each CCW 1-1/2 turns. This should get the engine running if it will. If it does not, check the lower diaphragm on the carburetor for hardness or cracking. You appear to be running on prime only–the carburetor doesn’t seem to be pumping in fresh fuel. You may need to do a carburetor clean and re-kit. Check the fuel line condition and the fuel filter in the tank for plugging. Make sure the muffler and air cleaner are not plugged. Once you get the engine to continue running, warm the engine up. Open the throttle and adjust the H needle CW–the engine should start to speed up, but still 4-stroking. The proper setting is 4-stroking, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW so that the engine runs fairly smoothly, yet will allow the engine to ‘follow the throttle’. Set idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.
There are 2 wav (sound – idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.
