A low charge may not provide enough juice to engage the PTO. If you do hear the click, there is power going to it. There could be a problem with safety switches. On most newer model lawn mowers, the brake has to be disengaged or off for the blades to operate.
If/when the PTO exceeds the preselected RPM setting, the EOC will de-energize the solenoid valve, disengaging the PTO.
the blade drive belt may be worn or broken and unable to engage the blades. you can install a new drive belt to solve the problem. the cable that controls the manual clutch could be damaged or misaligned as well or its tension spring could be broken realigning or replacing the cable with a new one should resolve.
The PTO is engaged and disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically, an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric or hydraulic mechanism are also options.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
A company gives its employees a set amount of PTO hours, which reset annually. Some employers reset PTO hours by hire date; others reset them on January 1.
Adjust the pressure by turning the valve stem with allen wrench in the hole through the spool. Screw stem up into block for more pressure and thread it down or out of block for less pressure.
A hydraulic PTO clutch is a power take-off device used to transfer power from an engine to other components. It is designed to automatically engage and disengage the engine from the driven component, allowing the engine to spin freely when not in use.

I have a Craftsman FS5500 48″ lawn mower. The PTO makes a noise (squeak) for a second when I pull up on the red blade engage knob. The blades do not engage. PTO does not turn. When I push the red button down to disengage there is a brief squeak from the PTO.
It worked well the past month then a little problem 2 weeks ago. It seemed to disengage after mowing a while. Then after sitting for 15 minutes the blades would engage. I used it earlier this week and the PTO won’t turn at all.
Just purchased from the last and original owner a month ago. He said the oil would need to be changed this summer. Could that be part of the problem? Engine runs great!
Also, I need an owners manual, not able to find from the previous owner.
Hi,The problem is probably in the button that you pull and push to engaged and disengage the PTO… If you wiggle the button or try to pull it slowly, you may find a spot where it will work. But the button has gone bad and will need to be replaced. If you are comfortable with wiring, you could jumper the wires and getting it working, but it would be a very temporary and possibly dangerous fix…

Blades will not engage, belt not broke but is very old, do I need new one?
Check if the belt is loose. With the engine off, try to pull the mower deck belt around by hand. If you can pull it easily, and the blades don’t turn, then replace the belt. If it’s hard to pull, and you can see the blades try to turn as you pull it, then your problem probably isn’t the belt, but the PTO clutch or mower engage switch.
Pto will not engage, clutch ok, replace pto switch, belt on correctly, fuse good, hat else can I check
On a cub cadet LT 1042, what does it mean when the blades engage on their own and won’t disengage and the motor makes a high squeeling sound
Sounds like the PTO clutch is bad either binding up or coming apart or binding up.
