How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A “flooded engine” simply has too much gas in its cylinders, so the spark plugs can`t ignite the fuel-air mix. It can happen for a variety of reasons — most commonly, because you pumped the accelerator pedal too many times when your engine hadn`t been started for a while.
Over-priming can happen when the primer bulb is pushed too many times. This can result in the engines of your lawnmower becoming flooded by fuel. The fuel can spread into the combustion chamber, where it can gather and pool. Under this condition, the spark plug can get too wet and will not ignite.
When too much fuel and not enough air gets into the engine, this is known as flooding the engine. And when the engine is flooded, it may not start or might stall while you`re out on the roads of Panama City, Springfield, and Callaway. It also causes you to use more gas than necessary.
How to avoid flooding the engine. The best way to prevent your engine from flooding is to allow your car to warm up properly when you`re starting it in the cold. It should take a few minutes at most; just wait until the idle speed drops and the sound of the engine changes.
Repeatedly applying full throttle quickly with the engine off can flood your carburetor and make your engine hard to start. In extreme cases this could cause hydrolock, where liquid prevents the movement of the pistons, but it`s hard to imagine getting there by pumping the throttle a few times.
What if the engine is flooded with water? If your engine is flooded with water rather than fuel, that`s a different problem. It could cause a lot of damage depending on how much water got in. To avoid flooding your engine with water, it`s best to drive carefully through fords and floods.
Operate the mower engine in the fast position. Engines with primer: For most temperature conditions, firmly push the primer bulb three times. In cooler weather, additional priming may be needed. A warm engine will usually not require priming.
Most commonly a result of improper starting, “flooding” results from various causes, including over-priming, closed choke, stuck valve, gummed carburetor, or immediately trying to restart an automatic choke engine. The easiest way to tell if your engine is flooded with gas is to remove the spark plug.
When trying to start a flooded engine, the end goal is to re-establish the fuel-air balance in your vehicle. To do so, simply open the hood of the car and let the excess of fuel evaporate. After waiting for some minutes, try starting your car again, keeping your foot away from the gas pedal.
Pull the engine oil and transmission fluid dipsticks and differential plug. If the fluid appears milky, diluted, is no longer its original color or is beige in color, then it is likely the pans contain water. The vehicle should be towed to your repair shop.
Getting your car started after you`ve flooded it

Leave it sitting a while for the fuel to evaporate. If the spark plugs aren`t too badly fouled, this can work. Try starting the engine with your foot flat to the floor. Most car computer systems interpret this as meaning that the engine is flooded.

In worst cases, the excess fuel can foul spark plugs, sometimes necessitating their cleaning or replacement before the engine will start.
If you stay below 2000 rpm, you will be OK. If you do it above 2000, do not redline it or keep it on the rev limiter for a long time. This is why the manufacturer put the rev limiter to protect the engine from over-revving.
Yes, this causes engine wear. When the transmission is in neutral and the engine is “revved” without any load, the spinning engine internals will accelerate, gathering rotational and lateral forces at a faster rate than designed by the manufacturer. Rapidly revving an engine will heat up the piston rings much faster.

A wet spark plug likely means that it hasn`t been firing due to engine flooding or a bad ignition cable. Dirt or moisture on the outside of the spark plug that provides a conductive path to ground, or an internal crack in the spark plug`s ceramic insulator that shorts the plug to ground also can be the culprit.
What is Gas Flooding? Gas flooding is the injection of hydrocarbon or nonhydrocarbon components into oil reservoirs that are typically waterflooded to residual oil (and perhaps in some cases as a primary or secondary method).

It has lost it's prime – Sta Rite Ds3hf 1.50 Hp Self Priming Irrigation Pump
ANSWER : Without more info it’s hard to say. This could be something as simple as a dirty lid “o” ring, if it is streched out or cracked you will need a new one. If not you can clean with dish soap then when you relube “o” ring use teflon or silicone grease then wipe excess off as this excess will collect dirt, also clean lip of pump pot also. If this is not the problem then you may need to replumb pump or replace seal. When you loose prime if the pump runs for any lenigth of time the water left in pot will overheat and cause plumbing to warp or seal falure.

Is it the carbeurator if the chainsaw is flooding?
ANSWER : `It could well be the carb flooding, however if you have been cranking the engine for a time without it starting it will keep drawing fuel into the cylinder, you need to remove the spark plug, switch the on/off switch to off, make sure the choke is off, crank the engine until no more fuel comes from the open plug hole, now leave with the plug out to allow it to dry out, refit the plug and try to start with no choke and wide open throttle.

I prime my tecumseh engine three times as stated. The lawn mower still will not start. How do I investigate to figure out what is wrong? I have taken it to a repair man twice. After I get it back it will start the first couple of times that I try it. Then it goes back to its history of not starting when I prime it 3 times. Sometimes I can prime it 7-9 times and it might start. Sometimes if I prime it 30-40 times it might start the next day.
ANSWER : This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Maybe remove the carb and tear it down and then soak it overnight in a cleaner after removing all the moving parts…not real hard normally…then let dry and reassemble…If this doesn’t improve the fuel delivery problem, maybe get another carb for it….Make sure the air filter is not plugged up, blocking air flow to the carb itself..just something to make sure of at first.
