The first tractor for which records survive was built in 1889 by the Charter Gas Engine Co, owned by John Charter. His first design used the wheels and transmission from a steam traction engine, powered by a single-cylinder Otto petrol engine.
In May 1901, Frasier & Chalmers, the Edward P. Allis Company, and a third company, Dickson Manufacturing, merged their companies together to form the Allis-Chalmers Company. Dickson Manufacturing built boilers, steam engines, locomotives, internal combustion engines, blowers and air compressors.
On this day back in 1985 the last Allis-Chalmers tractors rolled out of the West Allis Works.

In May of 1985, the ag division of Allis-Chalmers was sold to KHD (Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz), and that was that. The new company, Deutz-Allis, kept the factory in West Allis, Wisconsin, open just long enough to burn through all the parts.
Allis-Chalmers designed the WC after the Model W was modified to make it better for cultivating. Allis-Chlamers had introduced the use of rubber tires to agriculture in 1932 and by building on that success, the Model WC became the best selling tractor Allis-Chalmers ever manufactured.
