How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Why Does Your Riding Mower Belt Keep Coming Off? Your riding mower belt keeps coming off because of several possible causes such as a damaged, dirty, or incorrectly installed belt. This problem can also be due to an oil leak, damaged mower pulleys, damaged bearings, or a misaligned or stretched out belt.
Improper belt tension is an obvious cause of slippage, which generates unwanted heat. Less obvious causes include misalignment, worn sheaves, or foreign material such as dirt, oil, or water. Unusually severe operating conditions or improperly designed drives also cause high belt temperatures.
Belt slipping off tensioner pulley is a common issue that can occur with any type of belt-driven system. The most likely cause is that the tensioner pulley itself is worn out or damaged. In some cases, the problem may also be caused by a misaligned pulley or by a loose belt.
Blocked cooling fins may be one of the more common causes of overheating in mowers specifically, since all the grass and debris from lawns or fields can easily end up in the cooling fins, keeping air from circulating and cooling the engine down. Low coolant, only on liquid-cooled mowers and not air-cooled.
A broken serpentine belt may stop the water pump from circulating coolant through the cooling system, causing the engine can overheat.
The belt squeals because there is improper tension in the belt drive system. This is usually caused by a worn automatic tensioner, but other causes can include a contaminated belt (oil, belt dressing, etc.) or a belt that is too long or worn out.
When the timing belt breaks, the crankshaft will continue to spin, while the camshaft will stop turning. As a result, the pistons will continue to rise and fall in their cylinders and can, in some instances strike the valves.
An easy solution is to remove the mower casing and clean it of dirt and debris. Low Oil Levels can also cause overheating. With not enough oil circulating, internal friction occurs preventing heat from not being reduced. Be sure to check your oil level each time before you start your machine, and add oil if needed.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
Check the pulleys that the mower drive belt rides on. Place your hand on the belt and push the belt down and toward the pulleys. Check on how the belt gives way to your pressure; it should not be loose enough to give way more than a few inches.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.

Poulan Lawnmower My lawnmower has a squel when I turn on the mower. I am wondering what this is.
ANSWER : The squeal is most likely the drive belt moving against a pulley or tensioner which is frozen due to a bad bearing. This can start a fire at worst and burn through the belt at the least. You need to have someone take a look at your belts.

Are all drive belts on lawnmowers compatible I have ariens ride-on lawnmower
ANSWER : All belts are not created equal. I recommend staying with the manufacturer’s belt. Riding mower belts have to take a lot of torque when engaged and a lesser belt will have much less life. You may end up changing belts several times to learn a valuable lesson.

Belt for self popelled mower keeps breaking? Cannot keep a new belt on pulley
ANSWER : Check that the pulley isn’t seizing up and causing the belt to snap, also be sure you loosen up the self propelled mechanismn by spraying down with WD 40, too much belt tension can cause this, but it rather seems like the belt pulley seizes and the engines drive pulley keeps turning causing the belt to overheat and break or stretch and come flying off.
