Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Vibration is usually an indicator that something is out of balance.
I would recommend removing the engine shroud so that you can clearly see the outside edges of the flywheel. Rotate it and carefully check to see if there is any wobble present. If there is, remove it and install a new key, and then re-install the flywheel.
Odds are it will be cured.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common cause of excessive vibration is an unbalanced blade. If you`ve recently had your blade sharpened, it`s possible the blade hasn`t been properly balanced during the sharpening process. To fix this, the blade should be removed, rebalanced and refitted.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters

It is one of the most common problems that cause lawnmowers to sputter. The mowers take the air from the surrounding through air filters and mix it with fuel inside the engine. So, if the air filter is clogged or dirty, it will affect the flow of air into the carburetor.

If the mower vibrates when you engage the cutting blades, there might be a problem with the blade drive system. Deck vibration can be caused by an unbalanced blade, worn pulley or mandrel, bad blade belt or debris caught inside a pulley. Loose nuts or bolts on the pulleys, mandrels or blades can also cause vibration.
Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to run roughly. If the carburetor is clogged, try cleaning it with carburetor cleaner.
When your mower vibrates severely, start by checking whether the blade is damaged, imbalanced or loose. Tighten the blade bolt if it`s loose. Replace the blade if it`s damaged. A rough-running engine can also cause severe vibrations so tune up the mower to cure engine vibrations.
A sputtering engine is a sign of a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can happen if you have a clogged somewhere in the fuel system that impedes the delivery of fuel into the chamber. For example, your fuel filter or fuel lines might be clogged.
One of the more serious noises is a rattling sound, as this can signify that you have loose parts that might come dislodged. The minute you hear rattling, it is imperative that you tighten the blade, flywheel, and other parts.
If the engine runs rough after hitting a rock or stump, check the flywheel key-a damaged flywheel key will disrupt the ignition timing. Check for fuel, oil or carbon deposits on the spark plug. Replace the spark plug if it`s fouled. Bad fuel causes a rough-running engine.
