How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the PTO clutch is not getting power, if the clutch solenoid is defective, or if the clutch is worn out, the lawn mower blades will not engage. The PTO clutch is not repairable—if the clutch is defective, you must replace it. Need help finding your model number? The PTO switch provides power to the PTO clutch.
Check that all the safety switches are working correctly, it is possible the seat switch is bad or loose plug/ bad wire. Also if battery weak or charging system weak/faulty the clutch will stall out engine, charge battery up with charger and try.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
Powershift PTO engagement problems could be from blocked hoses or fittings, bad connections or ground or the solenoid. Mechanical PTO engagement problems could originate from low air pressure, improper cable installation or back lash too tight.
On a Putzmeister MR 688 series the PTO Pump/Drive switch gets its power from a fuse located in the Mack fuse block.
This operation is crucial to the overall functioning of riding mowers, and thus PTO clutch repair may need to be immediately performed on riding mower models that have a failed clutch. Fortunately, you can fix your clutch irrespective of your experience with PTO clutch installation.
PTO clutches generally overheat because of improper lubrication/greasing (both too much and too little can cause problems), excessive sideload, or a new installation. Operators are advised to reduce sideload and inspect grease levels first.
To bypass a safety switch on a lawn mower, you will need to disable either the PTO or seat safety switch. Disabling the PTO switch requires cutting the wires near the engine. You must disconnect and cut wires under the mower`s seat to disable a seat switch.
The PTO switch is a critical safety device developed to prevent unintentional blade actuation of lawn equipment.
For power shift operation, when a power shift PTO is engaged, a solenoid is energized. Air or hydraulic fluid then compresses a clutch pack in the PTO. This locks the PTO output gear to the output shaft and allows work to be done. When the power shift PTO is disengaged, the solenoid de-energizes.
The PTO relay then outputs 12V to power the PTO hot shift solenoid provided by the PTO manufacturer. These are the things to check when your PTO is not functioning correctly. Nothing happens when you turn on the PTO button. Make sure you do not have any active faults/a visible check engine or transmission light.
The PTO is engaged and disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically, an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric or hydraulic mechanism are also options.
Overloaded circuits, short circuits and ground faults are all legitimate reasons why your fuses blow on a regular basis or causes for your fuse box to trip out. Other causes could be a result or ageing or faulty wiring as well as power surges.
Tractor PTO test (power takeoff test) refers to a series of tests performing on a dynamometer which is connect to a tractor power output shaft and the tractor is stationary. Agricultural tractor PTO output power test parameters include speed, torque, power, fuel consumption and so on.
The power take-off shaft on a tractor transmits power from the tractor`s engine to PTO-driven machines or implements. The machine`s drive shaft is connected to the tractor`s PTO stub shaft and transfers energy from the tractor to the machinery.
If a belt is not tensioned properly, it will ride too loose or too tight on the pulley. A belt that`s too loose on a pulley will cause slippage, which leads to heat build up from friction. This heat will damage your rubber belts and cause the belts to crack and break.
The PTO shaft should be greased regularly to keep the universal joints from failing and to stop the shaft from seizing. Failure to grease your shaft regularly or as outlined in the PTO shaft`s maintenance schedule could result in end thrust potentially destroying the implement`s gearbox.
A company gives its employees a set amount of PTO hours, which reset annually. Some employers reset PTO hours by hire date; others reset them on January 1.

Mower won’t start
ANSWER : This may sound stupid but don’t mean it to…
Have you tried with the choke all the way open? Do you have an automatic cruise? Is the right (correct) pedal being pushed in? These will affect if it starts or not. Also if your drive belt or one of the other belts not being tight enough will affect if it starts or just turns over. Not too many things can stope it from starting with new/good battery AND if its getting gas. Try cleaning your gas line and obviously making sure there is no obstruction around or near your blade, if it does start with blade engaged that is :))
If it doesn’t start with blade engaged, well make sure it’s in neutral. Mine won’t start in reverse but will in forward or neutral.

Hope it helps.

Toro 149cc Lawn Mower Won't Start – Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools
ANSWER : Bad carburetor your old fuel jammed up the jet so it won’t get fuel and if it does it will start and shut off So replace the carb or try to clean the jet and run non oxy fuel only

I have a Craftsman FS5500 48″ lawn mower. The PTO makes a noise (squeak) for a second when I pull up on the red blade engage knob. The blades do not engage. PTO does not turn. When I push the red button down to disengage there is a brief squeak from the PTO.

It worked well the past month then a little problem 2 weeks ago. It seemed to disengage after mowing a while. Then after sitting for 15 minutes the blades would engage. I used it earlier this week and the PTO won’t turn at all.

Just purchased from the last and original owner a month ago. He said the oil would need to be changed this summer. Could that be part of the problem? Engine runs great!

Also, I need an owners manual, not able to find from the previous owner.

Thanks

ANSWER : Hi,The problem is probably in the button that you pull and push to engaged and disengage the PTO… If you wiggle the button or try to pull it slowly, you may find a spot where it will work. But the button has gone bad and will need to be replaced. If you are comfortable with wiring, you could jumper the wires and getting it working, but it would be a very temporary and possibly dangerous fix…

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim

Exmark 44 Mower bogs down going forward
ANSWER : When you say ‘going forwaed’, is that while mowing or does it do it without the blades engaged or ‘not mowing’?

Why wont my blade engage
ANSWER : Bad pto clutch shorting out

Have a john deere sabre turn key won’t start thought battery was dead charged battery still won’t start jump start with car battery it will start then . try to engage reverse with blades running it shuts off. shut down tractor won’t start again .I,m thinking wiring not grounded but where or replacement switch somewhere.give best advise.
ANSWER : Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.I hope this gets you going again.

I was mowing and the blades stopped turning. I disengaged and re-engaged the blades a few times and they started back. Then a few minutes later the blades stopped again then the motor stopped and will not start.
ANSWER : I have no idea what type or model of mower you have but if I was to guess I would say it has an electric pto clutch on it, if so remove your pto belt and clutch. I would bet it is burned out and locked up preventing your motor from turning over. Once the clutch is removed I will bet it will start and run fine. This is not a cheap fix but relatively easy one. Hope this helps.
