Use a work light or flashlight to look under your car. You should be able to see and reach a large nut or plug located under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine (see Figure 13-6). This is the oil drain plug.
If your engine is equipped with a drain plug, it would be located under the lawn mower deck. Look carefully as the drain plug may be obstructed by clumps of turf or debris, the belt guard or the mower blade (use caution when moving the blade).
Be sure to shut off the engine if there is any amount of gasoline inside of the oil tank. Completely drain the oil tank using the drain plug and allow the oil tank to air out and dry overnight. Do this outdoors. Fill the oil tank with new oil.
On mowers, the plug is typically below the deck and may be obscured by a layer of grass and debris. On newer engines, they no longer have the drain plug underneath the engine.

My yard man mower is blowing black smoke when I crank it. Why would this be?? It was low on oil, but we filled it up and it still smokes. Do we need to change the oil? If so how? It has a honda engine, and is 2 years old.
ANSWER : Like the other guy says drain the oil out. Disconnect the spark plug wire (for safety). Place the mower onto a stable platform to work from. To remove the drain plug usually you need a 3/8 ratchet and I use a short extension so I don’t skin my knuckles. Put the extension end into the drain plug and remove. Have a drain pan to catch the used oil. Clean the area around drain plug first. When oil is drained replace the drain plug and tighten. Add your new oil. ONLY ADD ABOUT 15 OUNCES. Use SAE 30 motor oil. Once you get the oil in set it on a flat surface and check for the proper level. Add if needed. Usually the push mowers only use about 16 ounces. I start with 15 because it is easier to add than remove the oil. Replace the spark plug wire, prime and start. It may smoke awhile to get the old oil burnt up.
