To make starting the STIHL 4-MIX engine easier, the engine has been fitted with a decompression system which extends the valve opening times when starting.
A decompression valve releases some of the compression from the combustion chamber during the starting procedure, making the engine easier to turn over when pulling the recoil rope.
A simple way to check for low compression is to place the chainsaw on the ground and use the starter rope to lift it. Good compression will prevent the rope from pulling out. You should be able to carefully lift the weight of the chainsaw by the starting cord.
The Stihl MS 290 FARM BOSS compression release will need to be replaced if it is broken or has significant carbon build-up.
Always cut on the compression side first! The area on the outside of the bend will pull apart when cut. This is the tension side. If you decide to cut this side only, the tree will split apart before the cut can be completed.

ANSWER : There is a special puller too that STIHL dealers posess, you cannot get one, sorry, you have to pay to remove it. The good news is, there is a chinese company on eBay that sells the pumps for $6 shipped from china versus the $33 you’d pay from STIHL for the same chinese-made part.

ANSWER : That can happen. When you go to store it, open the oil cap and then close it to lose the pressure the pump builds up inside.
