How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A smaller chainsaw will usually have a compression range of between 90 and 110 PSI. A bigger chainsaw will typically have a compression reading closer to 160 PSI. If you get readings too low for an average chainsaw, it might be an indication of a leak of some kind.
The Stihl MS 250 C compression release will need to be replaced if it is broken or has significant carbon build-up. Carbon build-up can result from too much oil in the gasoline [mixed rich] or from using fuel of poor quality [fuel that has become stale].
Automatic Compression Release (ACR) valves reduce the strain of starting your high performance motor by reducing cylinder compression – automatically! The engine is easier to turn over resulting in less wear on your starter and battery. After start, the ACR valves close to restore full compression.
Chainsaw manufacturers include a spark arrestor on every model to prevent combustion byproducts from escaping the combustion chamber during saw operation and starting a fire. The arrestor is a screen that fits behind the muffler.
A simple way to check for low compression is to place the chainsaw on the ground and use the starter rope to lift it. Good compression will prevent the rope from pulling out. You should be able to carefully lift the weight of the chainsaw by the starting cord.
A compression test reveals the condition of your engine`s valves, its valve seats, and piston rings and whether these parts are wearing evenly. Healthy engines should have compression over 100 psi per cylinder, with no more than 10 percent variation between the highest and lowest readings.
Since the gasoline engine has a spark plug, only moderate compression is enough, requiring about 140-160 pounds per square inch (PSI). Depending on their size and application, some engines may require a higher compression such as 220 PSI.
The decompression valve is part of the easy starting system. The valve should be pressed before starting to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as reducing the effort needed to pull the starter rope.
The Stihl MS 290 FARM BOSS compression release will need to be replaced if it is broken or has significant carbon build-up.
The Decompression lever is designed to help kickstart a motorcycle. On a four stroke bike, when the decompression lever is engaged, it opens the exhaust valve to rotate the engine to top dead center, or TDC.
A decompression device for an engine reduces pressure in the engine`s combustion chamber thereby reducing the amount of force required to start the engine.
After compressing working fluid in the cylinder cap, the solenoid of the decompression valve is turned ON. Then, the compressed working fluid is released back to the reservoir through the flow control valve. Pressure in the circuit drops until it hits a certain point set in the switch PS.

Cylinder compression Can't start due to compression built-up. Can't spind the engine over fast enought. Take spark plug out and engine spind freely.
ANSWER : Look on the side of the cylinder for the compression release valve

Homelite 330 chain saw no lubrification to the chain
ANSWER : Allot of times this is caused by dirt plugging up the outlet. Pull the side cover that holds the bar on and clean using carb cleaner and compressed air. You should see a small metal tube or hole where the chain runs at the top, make sure it is clear. If you remove the cain and the bar you can start and rev the saw to make sure oil is weeping, it won’t squirt out.

My homelite super 2 chainsaw keeps flooding. it was running fine and all of a sudden its flooding. any help is welcome
ANSWER : Needle valve in carb. maybe hung open. Or diaphragm may be bad. You will need to remove carb. and clean and replace all worn parts. Go to homelite.com to find manual for the saw.

Homelite d3350b what is fuel oil mix i was told i could use 50 to 1 because the new oils are better?????
ANSWER : Buy a good quality oil and mix it to the OIL manufacturers recommendation regardless of what the chainsaw manual says. If you are poking around the barn and find an old can of Homelite 2 cycle oil that says mix 25:1 mix it at that ratio.
All modern oils, chainsaws, and the EPA recommend 50:1. There has been great improvement in 2 cycle technology over the years. To rich a mix causes carbon build up on the piston that breaks loose and scores the piston and cylinder, and it stinks!

How to remove snap in primer bulb on homelite chainsaw
ANSWER : Use a set of pliers to pinch the two ‘ears’ together so that the bulb assembly can be removed. Try to install the new one in the same relation as the old one so that the two fuel lines don’t become reversed. Good luck!

Chainsaw will not idle homelite – Homelite ZR10926 16 Chain Saw
ANSWER : Any more info?

I just started up my new 16″ Homelite and the engine starts, but the mechanism that powers the chainsaw isn’t rotating… any suggestions?
ANSWER : The engine needs to be accelerated to make the chain turn. The chain should not be so tight on the bar that you can’t turn it by hand. Make sure the chain brake is off by pulling back on the brake paddle which has a ‘toggle’ effect–it should snap over to the new position. If still having problems, it is time to return for warranty exchange or repair. Hope this helps!
