What is the gas to oil ratio for Mantis 2-cycle engines? Always make sure you use the proper 50:1 mixture ratio; that is 2.6 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of 89 octane or higher gasoline. If your engine is getting hot, you may not have enough oil in your gas mixture to properly lubricate the engine.

After a few weeks of no use, my tiller started on the first or second pull but even after long warm up, it stalled as soon as I trottled up. This happens even on the stand with no resistance/load. The machine is not jammed–the tiller blades turn while the machine is idling. It just dies as soon as I try to work.

I have a two cylinder Mantis tiller. It has locked up and the cord is locked. I am unable to pull the cord. Any suggestions? I was in the process of using the tiller when it felt as if it were running out of gas. It stopped on its own, and then it was locked up and I was unable to pull the cord.
ANSWER : Check the oil, if not full fill it, take the shroud off, should be for bolts, fit a socket on it with a breaker bar or ratchet and turn it a few times, then reassemble and start. Hope this helped Tim

My tiller stopped moving during use, after enitting a puff of smoke. The motor still works well; it does not move, however. Is there a belt that could be burned out? Is this something that can be attempted by an amateur or should best be left to the experts?
ANSWER : You don’t say where the smoke came from but check out the worm gear box and see if gear is eaten up. Supposed to be greased regularly but gear can wear out over time or overloaded digging. . ANSWER : Start out with 1.5 turns on High speed jdet and 1/2 turn on the low speed. Make sure plug is not wet, better yet install a new one. Clean, fresh fuel and give it a pull.

My Mantis Tiller won’t start and there is grinding type noise when I try and start it. I recently did some very lengthy trench digging over a period of about 2 months.
ANSWER : It sounds like the clutch springs may be overheated and the clutch shoes rub while you try to start it.If you loosten the screw that holds the engine to the gear box you can try to start it without the clutch and see if that is it.Good luck
