How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
Most saws use 0.325″, 3/8″, or 0.404″ pitch, with 1/4″ less common. Most consumer saws use a type of 3/8″ chain called “low profile”. We call it Picco. A few older saws use 1/2″ pitch chain.
There are three main reasons for a chain to come off: Incorrect bar and/or chain for the saw; check to be sure that you are using the proper chain pitch, gauge and number of drive links to match the guide bar. Chain not properly tensioned; It is normal for a new chain to stretch and require frequent adjustment.
Your chain saw bar may have the information you are looking for stamped right into it. It can usually be found near the back of the bar, where it mounts to the saw. For instance, in the example on the right, the chain is 3/8” pitch and . 050” gauge with 72 drive links.
It might be that the chain is worn, has a stiff or bent link, or has become clogged up with dirt. A visual inspection while turning the cranks should reveal if there`s a problem here. The chainring, or a chainring tooth, could be bent. Again, a visual check will tell you what you need to know.
Most modern chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers and other small-engine two-stroke equipment recommend a 50:1 oil mix ratio, but some recommend 40:1 and older two-stroke equipment might even call for 32:1.
043″ Gauge (R44)
Basically, it`s the size of, and spacing between links. For the same number of links, a 3/8” chain is longer. This also means that the shape of the sprocket at the motor and at the tip of the sword are different. 3/8” and 0.325” chains are NOT interchangeable.

What length replacement chain is needed for chain #104301S for pole saw typmodel 104316-04? Thank you.
ANSWER : Mr/Ms McGregor;
Take your existing chain to a local chainsaw shop. They will use it as a pattern to make a suitable replacement. Chain size is dependent on the number of drive links not bar or chain diameter. If you don’t have an existing chain take saw and bar. HTH

I was using the saw as a chain saw last weekend to cut up an old tree stump when the chain came off. I don’t know how to access it to put it back on and don’t have a user manual. The saw belonged to my late father and I don’t know if he even kept the manual.
ANSWER : You will have to remove the cover on the side the chain bar goes into. There should be one or two nuts holding the cover on the side. The is also a chain tension adjuster you may have to loosen to put it back on. Make note of the direction of the teeth on the chain. It is an directional chain. The tension adjuster is usually a flat head screw on the front side right beside the chain bar.Unless it is a really old saw, manuals are available from most manufacturers for free download. See if you can locate a brand name and model number.
