The mower was runnning rough, made a loud clunk noise, backfired and died. When I tried to restart the start just makes a clunk noise but does not turn over.

Take a look at the blade under the mower deck. Sometimes the knocking sound you hear could be the result of a loose, bent or wobbling blade. If you`ve recently removed or replaced the blade and it suddenly started knocking, this is quite possibly the cause of your issue.
A loud clunking noise when the starter is engaged in a car could be a sign of a bad starter motor or a damaged flywheel. Most likely the starter is loose on the mount due to loose or missing bolts.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
If the starter motor spins but does not crank the engine, you likely have a problem with… Faulty or damaged battery. To address this issues, check the battery and charging system for problems.
When you hear a click as you turn the key, a weak battery, bad starter solenoid, faulty wiring, failed starter motor or a seized engine could be the cause.
If the engine starter motor turns over, the starter solenoid needs to be replaced. If the engine starter motor does not turn over once a jumper wire is connected to the two large lugs on the starter solenoid, replace the engine starter motor.
The Spark Plugs

The engine`s spark plugs get worn down and damaged over time due to use. A faulty spark plug can cause hard starts, low fuel consumption, and reduced performance. Spark plugs can be one of the first things you check when your tractor performance is off.

Problem — The Engine Turns Over But Won`t Start

First, check the fuel filter and the fuel lines running from the tank to the engine. A clogged fuel filter or fuel lines can prevent the diesel from getting to where it needs to go, effectively choking off your engine`s energy supply.

Usually a rapid clicking noise is a good indication that your starter motor isn`t getting enough electrical current to engage – basically your solenoid is trying to engage but can`t make the connection.
One possibility is the solenoid. A single “click” sound comes from the engine compartment or from under the car. This could mean that the solenoid is trying to engage but that the internal components are stuck and unable to work properly. Repeated “clicking” sounds usually indicate a dead battery.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters

It is one of the most common problems that cause lawnmowers to sputter. The mowers take the air from the surrounding through air filters and mix it with fuel inside the engine. So, if the air filter is clogged or dirty, it will affect the flow of air into the carburetor.

One of the symptoms of a bad starter is a single clicking noise when you turn the key or push the start button. Tapping the starter can sometimes get it going again, but no guarantees. Most likely, you`ll need to get your starter repaired or replaced.
Push-Start Your Engine

Push-starting, also known as bump-starting, is an old-school yet effective way to start a car with a bad starter. However, it only works if you have a manual transmission vehicle. Here`s how you do it: Keep the ignition on and put the manual transmission of your car in first or second gear.

Starters do wear out or fail over time. However, they usually have several warning signs that they`re on the way out, and mechanics may ask you about them if you take your vehicle into an auto repair shop. Your answers will help them diagnose the problem.
With the ignition turned off and the transmission in “park” — and with all due care — connect one end of the red/positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery. Touch the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the starter motor. The starter should spin/crank the engine.
When you attempt to start the vehicle, is there a clicking sound, but it won`t turn over? That may be a good sign. If a jump gets the car running, but won`t turn over again once it`s shut off, a dead battery is likely the cause.
Rusting, power failure, irregular pressure, missing equipment, an incorrect amount of voltage or current, dirt stuck in the system and corrosion are some of the possible reasons why a solenoid valve may not properly close or open.
The starter circuit connects the battery to the starter motor. The solenoid acts as the on/off switch for the starter motor circuit — controlling the burst of electrical current from the battery. The solenoid itself is controlled by a control circuit, which links it to the ignition switch.
One of the best ways to determine if a car fuse has blown is by using a test light. It should illuminate both ends of the fuse, and, if it doesn`t, it needs to be replaced. Sometimes, a blown fuse is caused by a damaged wire, motor, or other part.
The advent of start/stop technology for internal combustion engines is straining the lifespan of existing starter solenoids. In a typical combustion engine application, a starter solenoid may undergo approximately 30,000 actuations over a 15-year vehicle lifespan.
In bypass starting, you touch a wrench or a screwdriver to the terminals of the starter motor, to the solenoid of a tractor, or to other equipment. This bypasses all tractor-neutral starting switches. Sparks fly and electricity snaps as the circuit is completed, the starter engages and the engine starts.
Tractors will start in gear if normal starting circuitry is bypassed. Start the engine from the operator`s seat with the transmission in park. Do not start the engine by shorting across starter terminals. Never start the engine while standing on the ground.
Try replacing the fuel filter; a clogged one will make the mower run sluggishly. Alternatively, check the spark plug. A spark plug that`s outlived its usefulness can cause a sluggish start. Pull the spark plug out, clean it off and reinstall it in the mower.

I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
ANSWER : There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.

I have a Poulan push mower that after mowing in a ditch started making a loud noise and running rough. It almost sounded as if metal was hitting metal. The mower was vibrating more than normal. I checked under the mower and nothing is hitting. After a few times of stopping the mower engine because it sound as if it is going to die down the mower will not start now. The shaft does not appear bent and the blade appears ok. The mower has oil, a good spark plug and a clean air filter. It was running fine until that moment. I did not see anything that I hit but it is possible I hit something in the ditch like a pine cone or branch. What could the problem be and how would I go about fixing it?
ANSWER : If you are sure the oil level is correct then it sounds like it’s about to die, unfortunately. A pine cone shouldn’t cause any damage, but a large branch may do so. Was it smoking before you shut it down? The vibration could be caused from a bent blade. It could also be caused from a part breaking in the motor. I wish I could have given you better news!

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

Motor won’t start and mower very difficult to push
ANSWER : Is there a puddle of oil under where it made the clunking sound, that would mean the engine is blown. another thing to check is to see if the motor bolts that hold down the motor came loose and is hanging down there by keeping the pullys from moving right..good luck

I have a 2 year old Toro push lawn mower that will not start. Everything has been tried: new plug, new gas, new air filter, even tried starter fluid. There is not even a sputter.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

Key start turns and makes a whining “I sort of want to start” noise but does not engage the engine. Previously the key start was sort of touchy and the key had to in just the right position to engage the starter. Could this be a starter motor problem? If so what is the part/fix?
ANSWER : If it is whining, the starter motor is turning. You possibly may have a broken starter drive. This is the little gear on the starter shaft. It’s not too expensive and relatively easy to replace.
