The primer plunger will have to be replaced. Some of them have an o-ring on the back of plunger that holds it in place.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If petrol is coming out of your primer bulb, this means that it is backing up in your carburettor and flowing out of the primer tube. The float-valve in your carburettor has most likely got stuck and just needs to be adjusted.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
If the motor starts initially but then won`t stay running, that means it`s getting a good initial injection of gas from the primer bulb, but then the carburetor starves off the oxygen it needs to keep combusting. When your carburetor is clogged, the cause is likely to be evaporated gas that has gummed up the pores.
The most common cause of this type of problem is when the fuel filler neck`s inner tube comes off of the neck itself. You will need to have the filler neck removed to check to see if the inner tube was knocked off from someone trying to get fuel out of tank with a siphon hose and managed to knock the hose off.
The problem may involve an annoying change (up/down) of engine speed while cruising at a steady pace, a low drop (or even cut-out) at idle or when approaching a stop, a wild high engine speed of several thousand rpm followed by a drop to near zero, etc.
The mower surges when the carburetor sucks air through an unsealed gap in the air intake manifold instead of through the air filter. Dirty carburetor. Clogged fuel jets inside the carburetor commonly cause the lawn mower engine to surge. Clogged jets can`t provide the right mix of air and fuel to the engine.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

Replace the Spark Plug. If your lawn mower starts then dies right away, another possible culprit for the issue is the spark plug. A spark plug problem will result in the mower being more difficult to get going, and in some cases, the faulty spark plug may prevent it from starting at all.
This is most likely a safety switch issue. Usually the seat safety switch will cause this problem. The mower dies because it thinks nobody is sitting in the seat, and shuts off for safety reasons.
It seems dangerous to start a car after overfilling, but it`s usually the best thing you can do. After you clean up excess fuel, it`s necessary to start the vehicle to burn off additional gas in the tank. If the gas spill is severe, speak to a professional or someone at the gas station before moving forward.
If you overfill your tank, it can cover the vapor intake hole with liquid gas, which can then be sucked into the charcoal canister. This can damage the canister and possibly other parts of the system, which will cause the car`s check-engine light to come on and could potentially cost hundreds of dollars to repair.
Debris blocking the suction strainer or foot valve is the most common cause. A blockage in the intake line can cause the water in the pump casing to overheat and literally boil out of the casing causing the pump to lose prime.
In short, to avoid failures, centrifugal pumps must always be primed before operating. Positive displacement pumps are self-priming with suction lift capability, but always check the operation manual or confer with an engineer to ensure the pump will properly function at start up without priming first.
In many cases, what causes your car to spit out gas is in the fuel filler vent not ventilating the fuel. When the fuel is not properly ventilated, pressure may start to build in the gas tank. This pressure results in the car spitting to reduce the pressure in the tank when the fuel nozzle is removed.
At cold enough temperatures, gas can separate and gel just like diesel. The more exposed to the cold the liquid is – think the fuel lines versus the fuel tank – the more likely this is to happen.

The purpose of the primer pump is to pump sufficient fuel from the supply tank to the engine and particularly to the injectors of a diesel engine to enable the engine to be cold-started without excessive use of the electrical system which normally operates the fuel pump.

Which gas line goes to which connecter on the carb? I disassembled to clean and it’s having pressure issues. The tank is filling with pressure and the bulb won’t retain enough gas to keep the
ANSWER : The thing to remember is that the primer pulls fuel from the carb into the bulb and dumps back to the tank, it does not push fuel into the carb, connect the fuel line from the tank to the carb connection nearest to the alluminium pump cover held with a single screw, the other one goes to the shorter of the two connections on the back of the primer.

I have a Craftsman Gold 6.0 mulching mower with a B&S engine on it that has been idle for about 10 years. It was only lightly used before that and I ran the gas tank dry before putting it away. Today I put gas in the tank pressed the primer bulb 3X and pulled the cord a few times without it starting. I noticed gas dribbling out of the little hole in the center of the primer bulb. It continuously drips and the gas is puddling on the top deck of the mower. Is this likely a problem with the primer bulb or something else? Thanks.
ANSWER : Sounds like the primer bulb dry rotted from sitting &/or the float is stuck in carb. If gas is indeed leaking from bulb. It will need to be replaced. While it is apart, clean carb inside & out with spray carb cleaner.
