24HP VTwin Hydrostatic 54″ Cut Riding Mower
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
If the engine is running normally, most likely the transmission is shot and you will have to replace it. You can find them used on ebay, craigslist, and mower junkyards. Be advised you have a used one in there now! You may want to shop around for a rebuilt exchange. If the engine does not seem to be running well, and if it is a B&S V2, then I would check for bent valve push rods under the little valve covers next to the spark plugs.Common for these to bend, knocking out one cylinder. Have to be replaced, and the rockers then adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing.
How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
There are a few common causes as to why a Craftsman riding lawn mower may be going slower than it should, ranging from a worn drive belt, clogged air filter, or even a loose or missing blade. Troubleshooting these issues can help you get your lawn mower back to its normal speed.
A: The first thing I would check is your air filter. It is common this time of year for air filters to become clogged with dust particles thus preventing appropriate air flow. This can gradually make your lawn mower sluggish and difficult to start.
One of the disadvantages of hydrostatic drives is that the majority of the oil stays in the loop and doesn`t return to the reservoir for cooling. One way to return some of the oil back to the tank is by using a hot oil shuttle valve.
They are filled with the specified pump fluid to match each pump design and then sealed by each manufacturer at their factories. Replacing hydrostatic fluid is normally not necessary, unless the drive system is in need of some other internal service or repair.
The mower surges when the carburetor sucks air through an unsealed gap in the air intake manifold instead of through the air filter. Dirty carburetor. Clogged fuel jets inside the carburetor commonly cause the lawn mower engine to surge. Clogged jets can`t provide the right mix of air and fuel to the engine.
The governor system is like a cruise control system. It maintains the speed of your lawn mower or outdoor power products.

Chain saw won’t start – pull starter pulley hard to pull?
If it worked fine the last time you used it, then pull the spark plug and try pulling the rope. See if it’s easier or if gas shoots out of the plug hole. I’ve seen this happen when the diaphram in the carb goes bad from sitting over winter. It loads up the cylider with fuel and makes it very difficult to pull the rope. If there is no fuel in the cyliner and it’s still hard to pull, make sure there is nothing binding the clutch/sprocket. I’ve had chucks of wook lodged in there that caused it to bind the crank output, which resulted in a hard pull on the rope as well.
Pull cord is difficult to pull after third pull becomes stuck but will turn if pull hard repeats every three to four pulls.
No response to clarification request.
Hard to pull starter rope. It doesn’t pull smoothly. hard to pull.
Take the spark plug out–does it pull smoothly now? If not, the pull cord may be the wrong size or it is damaged and/or doesn’t rewind correctly. Does the machine have a compression release? If so, it may be plugged with carbon. With the spark plug out, pull the engine through several times briskly with the throttle open and the choke off to expel any excess fuel from the crankcase. Hope some of this helps!
My chainsaw starts when there is no bar and chain on it but when I put the bar chain and side casing back on tighten the chain and pull the starter cord it is hard to pull and then the chain goes loose again
Have you just replaced the chain? If so there is a possibility the chain and drive sprocket don’t match causing the engaging spurs to ride on the sprocket teeth
When I pull the cord, the string is hard to pull and recoils out of your hand about half way through the pull
Sounds like you have two problems. One the flywheel brake is not being released completely and second the flywheel key has been sheared. It is why the rope is being jerked out of your hand. The mower is out of timing and when the spark plug fires before it is suppose to, it jerks the rope out of your hand.
My edger tipped over briefly, now the starter cord is hard to pull and it won’t start.
Try removing the spark
plug and squirting some carb cleaner or starting fluid in the
cylinder. Pull the starter cord several times for the piston to drive
out the oil. Clean the plug and replace it. Try to start as normal.
If you have starting fluid squirt a shot in the air cleaner to help
make it easier to start the first time.
Recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn’t retract pull rope
Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.
10 year old Toro 2017 lawnmower, suddenly stopped while cutting grass. Oil quite low. Cannot pull cord more l than few inches.
When you pull the cord does it hit a hard stop and not go any further or does it get really difficult?
