Hello. There a few things which may cause this depending on the make , model , and age of the saw. Try removing the bar and chain and clean the area around and behind the clutch. Compressed air followed by spray on engine cleaner work well.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Install a safety tip that covers the nose of the guide bar on the saw to prevent contact with the kickback zone. The tip must be removed for making bore cuts (pocket cuts) or for cutting wood thicker than the length of the guide bar. Wear any required personal protective equipment.
Most of today`s chain saws incorporate features which reduce kickback and other sources of chainsaw-related injury. These built-in features include chain brakes, the front (left) hand guard, the bar tip guard and low or reduced kickback chain and guide bars.
To stop your chainsaw from getting stuck, make a cut on top of the log or tree that`s preferably one-third of the log`s diameter. Use your chainsaw to cut from the underside until you meet the initial top cut. Always stand on the side when cross-cutting to prevent injury.
The most effective way to avoid kickback on a table saw is by using a riving knife. Most table saws have these installed right behind the blade. As you pass your piece of wood through the table saw blade it will slip under the riving knife, keeping the board straight and preventing kick back.
A push stick will keep your hands further away from the blade. In case kickback does happen, you can be sure that your hand won`t get drawn into the blade. Additionally, a push stick itself will act as a kickback counter-measure because it gives you better control of the stock.
The most common form of kickback involves a vendor submitting a fraudulent or inflated invoice (often for goods or services which were not needed, of inferior quality, or both), with an employee of the victim company assisting in securing payment.
Kickbacks occur when a saw seizes the stock and hurls it back at the operator. This can happen when the stock twists and binds against the side of the blades or is caught in the teeth. A blade that is not shvarpened, or that is set at an incorrect height, can cause kickbacks.
Low-kickback saw chain inhibits overly deep cuts through modifications to cutter and link geometry. Of these commonly-used means of reducing the risk of kickback, only low-kickback saw chain, due to limiting depth- of-cut, directly affects cutting effectiveness and efficiency.
Number of teeth on sprocket nose

Sprocket noses with up to 10 teeth have a lower kickback tendency than models with 11 or more teeth. The more teeth the sprocket nose has, the higher the cutting performance. This is especially so when working with the bar nose.

Kickbacks occur when the blade catches the stock and throws it back toward the operator. Kickbacks can result if the blade height is not correct or if the blade is not maintained properly. Kickbacks are more likely to occur when ripping, rather than crosscutting.

How do I get the brake band ,located inside the chain cover, assembled back onto the chain saw. clutch assembly. The band brake diameter seems too small to fit around the clutch housing.
ANSWER : You need to load the brake, clamp it in a vice, be carefull not to damage the cover, if the hand gaurd is connected to the brake pull it fully back until the locks off, this may take a fair amount of force as it is compressing a large spring, if the hand guard is on the machine, remove it and use this as a tool to load the brake, the only other way is to remoce the clutch and sprocket, now refit the brake onto the saw, now pull the hand guard fully back to load the brake.

I was using the saw as a chain saw last weekend to cut up an old tree stump when the chain came off. I don’t know how to access it to put it back on and don’t have a user manual. The saw belonged to my late father and I don’t know if he even kept the manual.
ANSWER : You will have to remove the cover on the side the chain bar goes into. There should be one or two nuts holding the cover on the side. The is also a chain tension adjuster you may have to loosen to put it back on. Make note of the direction of the teeth on the chain. It is an directional chain. The tension adjuster is usually a flat head screw on the front side right beside the chain bar.Unless it is a really old saw, manuals are available from most manufacturers for free download. See if you can locate a brand name and model number.

Chain brake stops motor dead when activated. – McCulloch 16 Inch Gas Chain Saw MCC1635AK
ANSWER : It sounds like when you pull the rope, the chain moves. Is this true? If so, it sounds like your clutch came apart, and is lodged inside the drum assembly. One way or another, if you activate the brake, and the engine stops, the brake band clamps down on the drum, and the drum is seized to the clutch. It will have to be taken apart and verified.
