Each model number contains three sections: MS, MSA, or MSE + numbers + letters. Let`s start with MS, a straightforward one to explain. MS stands for Motorsäge (chainsaw in German), and MSA means it is a battery chainsaw, while MSE indicates it is an electric chainsaw.

Engine size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or cubic inches. In general, the bigger the number, the more powerful the engine.

If you are replacing a Stihl® chain, you can look at the numbers on the side of the chain to determine pitch, gauge, and other characteristics of the chain. Example: Your chain has the number 33RM2 stamped in the side of it. The last three numbers (or letters) denote characteristics of the chain.
To get a chain that is the correct size you need to count the drive links (those little teeth on the underside of the chain). One tip is to place a strip of tape on the first link and count your way around. You need to know exactly how many there are to get the correct chain size for your chainsaw.
STIHL`s green and yellow color code system serves to identify STIHL bars and chains with different kickback reduction character- istics. Green (go) marks those products which are designed to reduce the risk of kickback injury and comply with the ANSI B175. 1 kickback standard.
Look for stickers labeling the equipment (e.g., “Four Cycle” or “No Fuel Mixing”). Look for an engine oil fill cap. Only four-cycle engines have a separate engine oil reservoir on the back or side, with another cap (usually yellow) for checking & filling the oil reservoir.
