Engines on most outdoor power equipment operate well with 5W30 Synthetic oil. For equipment operated in hot temperatures, Vanguard 15W50 Synthetic oil provides the best protection.
While there is a mountain of information about the various oil choices, the first step is honestly quite simple: Look in your car`s manual. The owner`s manual for your car will list its recommended oil weight, whether that`s a standard format like 10W-30 or something more unusual.
SAE-30 oil is often a safe bet for your mower, but it`s still worth referring to your owner`s manual since a lawnmower is no small investment. Since you won`t be mowing in the wintertime unless you have a landscaping emergency in colder temperatures, there`s no reason to use a multi-grade motor oil such as 5W-30.
Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly.
SAE 30 – Warmer temperatures, most common oil for small engines. SAE 10W-30 – Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold-weather starting, but may increase oil consumption. Synthetic SAE 5W-30 – Best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.
There`s not much difference between 10W-30 and 10W-40 motor oil. What sets them apart has more to do with temperature fluctuations and engine load. For moderate weather, either engine oil grades should work fine.
Motor oil can be segmented into four basic varieties—synthetic oil, synthetic blends, high mileage oil, and conventional oil.

The recommended oil viscosity for your vehicle, according to Kia documentation, is 10W-40. If you drive the vehicle in exceptionally cold weather, well below 32 degrees, you can use 5W-30 oil but even 10W-40 is still perfectly OK to use if outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

Is SAE 30 Oil The Same As 10W-30? No. Unlike SAE 30, SAE 10W-30 is multi grade oil. SAE 10W-30 has SAE 10W viscosity at a lower temperature and SAE 30 viscosity at a hotter operating temp.
Car oil is similar to lawn mower oil, and you can use it in lawn mowers with four-stroke engines. However, car oil has a high concentration of additives and can damage smaller engines. It`s also important to match base oils; otherwise, you risk damaging your lawn mower`s motor.
So how much oil does a lawnmower take? Most walk-behind mower engines like Briggs and Stratton will take from empty approximately . 65 us quarts (. 6lt); Honda walk-behind mowers will take a little less .
Your owner`s manual will tell you the exact grade required, but in almost all cases 10W30 is the right stuff for a four-stroke engines. Any brand of oil that`s suitable for cars or trucks will work fine in your mower.
You can use 10w30 instead of 5w30 oil since both meet the SAE standard for viscosity at operating temperatures. Generally, the viscosity difference between the two is neglectable. However, it`s important to note that a 10w30 oil will move slower than a 5w30 oil in cold environments.
Can you use 5W-30 instead of 10W-30? Absolutely yes for car engines, 5W-30 is usually synthetic and superior to 10W-30. Both have the same viscosity at the operating temperature of an average car engine. 5W has lower viscosity when cool and is considered better for the car engine during engine start.
The oil you use for your car`s engine is the same one you can use for your lawn mower. However, make sure that your motor oil is of high quality before using it in a lawn mower engine, which is comparably smaller and less hardy. The quickest way to shorten the life of your lawn mower is to use low-quality engine oil.

Oil leaking out on yardman mower – Yard Man YardMan 11A41K3001 21Inch 173cc Kohler OHV Gas Powered BagMulchSide Discharge Lawn Mower (NonCARB Compliant) ()
ANSWER : You haven’t supplied a lot of information but generally when this happens it is due t the mower being tipped the wrong way.
If you must look under the mower then tip it back with the handles to the ground and front wheel in the air.
Now to rectify your problem; The air-filter will probably be saturated with oil. It will probably be the cartridge type which is not serviceable. Purchase a new filter (take your old filter so the sale person can compare like for like). Before you refit the new filter, take out the sparkplug, it will probably be saturated in oil – wash it in petrol, let it dry then refit it. The engine should start and belch out great quantities of smoke. Don’t be alarmed this will burn away. Once the smoke has cleared, check the oil level, fit the air filter and mow your lawn.

Dont know what type of oil to use – Toro Power Lawn Mower
ANSWER : Put straight 30 weight motor oil in it. Not 10W30 or any multi-viscosity oil. Straight 30 weight motor oil. If you’re doing a complete oil change, then you may want to use Synthetic 30 weight, which will last longer between oil changes and also make your engine last longer (but it costs more too). Best of luck to you.James

What type of oil does a troy built tiller use? I have lost my book.
ANSWER : This is dependent upon what the engine application on the tiller is. If it’s 2-stroke, use a quality synthetic or semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil mixed with the gas. If it has a 4 stroke engine use SAE30 oil, unless you run synthetic (which I highly recommend), then you can use a multi-viscosity oil if you like, say 10W-30.
