Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The bar is determined by the engine capacity
small 35 cc engines run 350- 450 mm bar
bigger the engine the bigger the bar
as for the chain
the bigger the bar the bigger the pitch of the chain
talk with a shop that sells chain saws ( sthil–Mccolluck etc) and get the chain and bar suitable for the motor size

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Typically a chainsaw with a shorter bar around 14” and smaller is enough for property maintenance, trimming, pruning, and cutting down broken tree limbs. On the other hand, cutting down small trees, thick branches, and cleaning up storm damage will need a longer bar around 16”-20” to make the job easier and safer.
Fully grown trees typically have a width (diameter) of approximately 14″-16″ on the small side up to 20″-22″ or more on the large side. Going off the recommendation of using a chainsaw with an extra 2″-4″ of length beyond the width of the tree, the ideal length chainsaw for cutting down trees would be between 16″-24″.
Different Bar Sizes

A Poulan 14 chainsaw can operate with a bar that`s 12, 14, 16 and 18 inches length. However, a larger bar may not always give the best cutting performance.

When choosing a chainsaw chain, you first need to know the pitch, the gauge and the number of drive links. Once you have these, everything else about the choice is basically about what you prefer. Pitch is the average distance between two rivets on the saw chain.
As a general rule, your chainsaw bar should be two inches longer than the diameter of the wood you`re cutting. That means to cut a 12-inch tree you`d need a 14-inch guide bar. You can cut larger wood in two passes.
Most saws use 0.325″, 3/8″, or 0.404″ pitch, with 1/4″ less common. Most consumer saws use a type of 3/8″ chain called “low profile”. We call it Picco. A few older saws use 1/2″ pitch chain.
How Big of a Tree Can an 18 inch Chainsaw Cut? An 18 inch chainsaw can cut a 16 inch diameter tree in a single pass. This is because your chainsaw bar should be 2 inches longer than the tree`s diameter if you are cutting it in a single pass. But if you cut from both sides, an 18″ chainsaw can cut a 32 inch tree.
Rip sawing first will result in a smaller cut envelope for the subsequent crosscut saw operation. And since there are more cuts, more throughput will also be required during the crosscutting that follows. Crosscutting first means the cutting envelope will by necessity be larger on the crosscut saw.
Rip teeth and Crosscut teeth.

One is to cut across the grain, called crosscut, and the other one is to cut along the grain called rip cut. There are specific types of saws for making crosscuts and rip cuts. If you use a wrong saw, you can damage the teeth. You can use crosscut saws for cutting diagonally to the grain.

A 20″ long cutting bar steps into a larger category of jobs. You can use this chainsaw size to cut through an 18″ tree. It is also great to split very large logs into halves or quarters.
