What you have is a generic pump from china more than likely. Its built along the line of a FAIP pump. They arent supposed to have the oil changed in them at all. Most are sealed pumps but may have a plastic plug in it. ANSWER : Most utility pumps use mineral oil, but more importantly how did it run out? If a seal was bad the oil should have been milky. It will overheat without proper oil level.

I have a 345 chainsaw. my oil pump will not supply oil to the bar.the oil case vent is clear. the oil case filter is clear. the oil passage to the pump area is clear. the oil pump rotates.the line from the pump to the bar is clear. the hole to bar is clear my assumption is that the pump is defective!!!!!! thanks
