Simply use a feeler gauge and slide the tab of the correct thickness between the tip of the valve stem and the end of the rocker. The camshaft manufacturer or your engine builder will give you the preferred lash range-it`s usually between 0.010- and 0.024-inch for a race engine.
Valve Clearance – Intake 0.08 – 0.13 mm (0.003 – 0.005 in.)
Set the intake valve lash when the exhaust valve is beginning to open. This will put the intake lifter at the base circle which is where you want it to be. Then set the exhaust valve lash when the intake valve is about halfway down on the closing side. Be Consistent.
We`ve found that proper valve setting should pass the “go/no-go” test – that is, for a correct 0.020 inch of lash, a 0.020-inch feeler gauge will slide through, but a 0.021-inch gauge will not.
If the valve clearance is too tight, then the valve will open earlier and close later then intended. If it too loose, the valve will open later and close earlier. The effect of setting the valve lash too tight can result in the valve not fully closing on the seat.
Too much clearance means the valves will likely clatter and, over the long term, cause damage to the valves, camshaft lobes or rocker arms. If there`s too little valve clearance, the valves won`t fully close, causing excessive heat, and the engine will lose power.
Clearances differ for the two valves and typically range from . 002 – . 004″ to . 005 – .
Valve clearances are the small gaps between the tops of the valve stems and the part of the mechanism which presses on them to open the valves . Check the clearances at regular intervals as specified in the car service schedule, and adjust if necessary.
To adjust hydraulic lifters two fingers spin the pushrod as the lock nut is gently tightened. When resistance is felt on the pushrod, that`s zero lash. The adjuster is tightened to specs then the setscrew locks it in place. When changing valvetrain components always check rocker arm geometry.
If you notice that your engine is losing power when you start it or if you hear loud tapping or clicking sound when you start it, your valves may be out of adjustment. A rough idling time, especially before the car warms up, is another sign that your valves are out of adjustment.
Major camshaft manufacturers recommend setting valves cold, to avoid erroneous adjustments on lifters that may be “pumped up” If you are setting valves on a fresh engine that has not been run, everything should be well lubricated before you begin.
To do that on a four-cylinder, eight-valve engine, use the rule of nine. Counting from the front of the engine if number eight valve is fully open, subtract eight from nine and the answer is one, so adjust the clearance on valve number one. If number six is closed, then adjust number three and so on.
Zero lash is defined where all the clearance has been removed between the lifter, pushrod, rocker arm, and the valve tip with the lifter on the base circle of the lobe. Zero lash is easily found by slowly tightening the poly lock while twirling the pushrod in between your fingers.
