Clearances differ for the two valves and typically range from . 002 – . 004″ to . 005 – .
Valve Clearance Tips

Recommended valve-to-piston clearance is generally 0.080-inch minimum on the intake side and 0.100-inch minimum for the exhaust valve. The exhaust needs a little more clearance because it expands more with heat.

Use a ring spanner to loosen the locknut and turn the screw clockwise to decrease the gap, and the opposite way to increase it. When the clearance is correct, hold the screw with a screwdriver while you tighten the locknut, then re-check the clearance. There may be a self-locking adjusting screw with no locknut.
Check – Slip the gauge blade between the rocker arm and valve tip. Move the gauge forward and back and feel the resistance. If you feel a nice amount of resistance, meaning, the gauge is snug but does move when you push on it – Your good, no need to adjust this valve. If you don`t feel any resistance, start adjusting.
When do I need to have a valve adjustment? You should have your valve lash inspected at manufacturers recommended intervals. A sure sign that it`s time for a valve lash adjustment is if your engine is making a loud clicking or tapping noise when starting up or if you experience a loss in engine power.
Valve clearances are checked and adjusted when the crankshaft/piston of the cylinder you are adjusting are at top dead center on the compression stroke.
The valve which allows mixture into the cylinder is the inlet valve; the one through which the spent gases escape is the exhaust valve.
Valve timing in its simplest form is controlled by the lobe profiles on the camshafts, with the aim to open the valves within the engine for the exact amount of time to get as much air/fuel mixture in and then exhaust gases out for each engine cycle, maximising the engine`s efficiency.
With that said, the average cost of a valve adjustment is about $150 to $300, assuming no other work or parts are required.
To do that on a four-cylinder, eight-valve engine, use the rule of nine. Counting from the front of the engine if number eight valve is fully open, subtract eight from nine and the answer is one, so adjust the clearance on valve number one. If number six is closed, then adjust number three and so on.

Engine spins but no fire to spark plugs – kawasaki Fh641v 21hp 21 Hp Riding Lawn Mower Engine ()
ANSWER : What is this engine mounted on? If it’s on a riding mower, you could have a problem in the interlock wiring that is “killing” the ignition. You can narrow down your search by disconnecting the ground wire that hooks to the ignition coil(s) and see if you have spark after that. If you have spark, then plug the wire back up and see if you lose it again. If you do lose it then you need to start troubleshooting the interlock circuit on the equipment. If you do not have fire with the ignition ground wire disconnected you then need to start looking at the engine ignition system. Hope this gets you in the right direction.
