How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A: This spark plug should have a gap set to 0.02 inches.
Replacement Plug

The Craftsman 4.5hp mower uses either a Champion model RJ19LM or J19LM spark plug, or equivalent, with the gap set at . 030 inch.

Many think the larger the gap, the better. However, if the gap is too large, and the ignition system can`t provide the voltage needed to spark across the gap, or turbulence in the combustion chamber blows out the spark, misfires will occur.
The incorrect plug gap for your engine can contribute to a high rate of misfires, loss of power, plug fouling, poor fuel economy and accelerated plug wear. It is always best to check the gap against the manufacturer`s specifications.
However, if the spark plug gap is too large, the spark is unlikely to consistently “jump” across the long distance between electrodes, thus leading to a rough-running engine or one that doesn`t run at all.
But if the spark gap is too small, there won`t be enough room for the airfuel mixture between the ground electrode and center electrode. So when the spark plug fires, there`s a possibility that nothing ignites. A wide gap between the center electrode and ground electrode allows for a strong, clean burn.
Signs of a Bad Spark Plug

If it has fuel which isn`t blocked from entering the piston anywhere (like the carburetor, if the fuel has been sitting unused in the tank for too long), it should start. If the gas tank is full and the fuel is good but your small engine won`t start, you probably have a faulty spark plug.

If the firing end of a spark plug is brown or light gray, the condition can be judged to be good and the spark plug is functioning optimally.
EITHER RC12YC or RC14YC will work. But for best results use NGK BKR5E or BKR6E. They last longer and are less prone to fouling. Helpful?
Over time, the gap between the electrodes grows larger. As this gap increases, more electricity is needed to spark ignition of the air/fuel mixture. As this happens, the ignition performance deteriorates leading to unstable ignition. Eventually, the gap will grow so large that the spark plug won`t arc at all.
Engine Hesitation

An engine that hesitates, or stumbles, upon acceleration is often the result of incorrectly gapped spark plugs. If spark plugs are gapped too wide, the ignition spark loses some of its strength as it crosses the spark plug gaps. This can result in engine hesitation.

At the top of the list, we have the NGK Spark Plugs. With iridium as its core material, this spark plug pack can operate at a much wider heat range as compared to ordinary spark plugs made out of platinum or copper.
Is Dielectric Grease Necessary for Spark Plugs? Strictly speaking, dielectric grease is not necessary for spark plugs to function; however, as noted above, it is a cheap, easy-to-use material that helps ensure the current moves through the spark plug into the ignition system.
These plugs are pre-gapped at . 044″.
A) For 28-32 cc engines, set the gap at 0.020″ (0.5 mm). B) For 38-55 cc engines, set the gap at 0.025″ (0.635 mm).
The spark plug gap for all ECHO products is . 024″-. 026″ or 6mm-8mm. The spark plug gap is the gap between the center and side electrodes.
