If you are using a drop spreader, such as Scott`s Classic Drop Spreader, and using a Yard Mastery granular fertilizer, you will want to set your spreader at a 7.
For fertilizers put the setting a notch or two above half. For example, if there are 20 notches on the spreader, 11-12 would be the setting. You don`t have to cover every square inch of turf to get good results, so if you think that`s too much, drop to a notch below half.
In general, the smaller you set your spreader setting the smaller the hole and the slower the material releases from the hopper. There are many different brands of spreaders on the market, and, new or old, it is highly recommended to properly calibrate your spreader before the first use in the spring.

I have an older scotts drop spreader, called a precision flow control model and do not know what settings to use with the Scotts turf builder I have purchased.

The best way is to just place a small amount… like 5 lb in the hopper…start with it barely open and see how far you get,,, then compute from there what you need…
The settings they give you are guesamates at best and are often set to place too much… why not??? they are selling you a product!!

I just bought a new Scott’s “Classic Drop” Spreader. I owned a Scott’s drop spreader before and the recommended settings on Scott’s fertilizer bags always worked great.
On Scott’s Turfbuilder fertilizer for Spring (yellow on bag) it recommends one setting for drop spreaders which was 5 3/4.
I drained an entire 14 lb bag with that setting before I was even 1/4 done with my lawn. Usually I can do my whole lawn and have some left over. I even returned the spreader to Home Depot and got another one and another bag of fertilizer and the same thing occured. I adjusted it down to 3 after a bit and still used the entire other 14 lb bag.

ANSWER : It should say on the back of the box or give some indication as to the settings but in general you can gague it from the flow rate and or the granual size but a rough setting is about 5 to 6
