Number of rings
Most pistons have at least two piston rings per cylinder. Automotive piston engines typically have three rings per cylinder. The top two rings— known as compression rings— are primarily for sealing the combustion chamber.
They are the top compression ring, then the intermediate compression ring and finally the oil control ring. These parts are relatively small in size but play a large role in the main cylinder block of your engine.
Ring width is the first consideration in ring selection, which depends on how you intend to use your engine. If you`re going racing or conducting a fuel economy challenge, you want thinner piston rings, which create less friction and consume less energy.

The frontmost cylinder is usually #1, however there are two common approaches: Numbering the cylinders in each bank sequentially (e.g. 1-2-3-4 along the left bank and 5-6-7-8 along the right bank).
Most stock automotive pistons have three rings, as shown here on this new automotive piston. The top and second rings are responsible for pressing tightly against the cylinder wall and sealing the combustion chamber, keeping combustion gases in and oil out.
Piston is an important part of the combustion chamber of a marine engine which converts the gas force into mechanical power by reciprocating motion. Piston skirt, piston rod and trunk piston are three components of the piston arrangement in marine diesel engines.
When it comes to piston rings, many of the world`s most recognizable and trusted brands come to us, including Chrysler, General Motors, Harley-Davidson, Ingersoll-Rand, Emerson, MTD, and many other Tier One manufacturers.
Piston ring size and configuration vary depending on engine design and cylinder material. Piston rings commonly used on small engines include the compression ring, wiper ring, and oil ring. A compression ring is the piston ring located in the ring groove closest to the piston head.
The piston diameter is engraved on top of the VHM pistons. You could also check this for yourself. Use the micrometer to measure the diameter of the piston, at 1 cm from the bottom of the piston skirt, as shown below.
Most modern 4-stroke engines are usually fitted with three piston rings per cylinder. The first ring holds back the combustion gases. The second ring helps to hold back combustion gases and also scrapes the oil downward. The third ring holds the oil where it needs to be.

Husqvarna 141 piston ring, what is the required gap for the ring? Also, does it matter which way the piston is positioned in the cylinder, there is no arrow or difference that I can tell by looking at it.
ANSWER : It’s been a few years but I’ve installed piston rings in many small engines. Many rings are beveled or rounded on the top outside to prevent excessive cylinder wear or scaring the cylinder wall. The bevel should be very slight and very hard so see. Some may have a small dot or marking cast into the ring near the end/split. If that is the case the ring should be installed with the marking turned toward the cylinderhead. Hint, lube the piston, rings, and cylinderwall before installing the piston. Gene
