In case of 540 rpm, the shaft has 6 splines, while for the 1000 rpm shaft, the number of splines is 21. If a PTO can run on both 540 rpm and 1000 rpm speeds then it is known as Dual PTO. This feature allows the operator to run the PTO at 540 rpm, but at a lower engine rpm than the standard, PTO rated speed.
The 540/540 Economy PTO allows operators to select the engine rpm needed for their power take-off (PTO) application. The economy position provides 540 rpm to the PTO at 1700 engine rpm.
The PTO lever allows the operator to quickly and smoothly control engagement and disengagement of the PTO using an easily-accessible control lever. If the tractor is stopped or is being downshifted, the PTO rpm levels can be maintained. To activate the PTO, simply move control lever forward.

By engaging 540E mode, the operator changes the gear reduction ratio keeping the PTO spinning at 540 rpm but lessening the engine rpm. When the operator shifts the PTO into the standard 540 mode, a different gear reduction ratio is used to operate the PTO at 540 rpm at the standard PTO rated speed of the engine.
An accurate way to determine which series of PTO you have is to take two measurements of the cross and bearing kit on the tractor-end of the driveline. Using calipers, measure the outside diameters of the u-joint caps, which would be the same as measuring the inside holes of the yoke ears.

The PTO and drive shaft rotate at 540 rpm (9 times/second) or 1,000 rpm (16.6 times/second) when operating at full recommended speed. At all speeds, they rotate in proportion to the speed of the tractor engine.
Operators can easily switch between 540 and 1000 rpm-driven implements simply by removing the stub shaft and reversing its position. The reversible 540/1000 PTO stub shaft is located in a dry cavity to allow changing from 540 to 1000 rpm or vice versa without any oil spillage.
The formula to use is: Equipment speed ÷ engine speed = PTO speed. By way of example, if the required speed for a pump is 1,000 rpm and the engine operating speed is 1,500 rpm, the percentage of PTO speed to engine speed is approximately two-thirds, or about 67 percent.
The design of the PTO itself is a two gear mechanically shifted Rear Mount PTO that is attached to rear mount apertures of a transmission.

Clutch Shift Design
Clutch shift PTOs have become more common on continuous duty applications. When your truck is not doing work, or you`re between stops, you can disengage the hydraulic system, which in theory will reduce the drag on the engine allowing for fuel savings.

1. You must know the RPM you wish to operate your vehicle at while running your application. We find that most operators generally run anywhere between 1100–1300 RPM, but it can vary.
Remember, you need to match the tractor to the job you want to do. If you want to operate a five-foot cutter (shredder), a good rule of thumb is 20 PTO horsepower (not engine horsepower). A six-foot cutter requires roughly 30 PTO horsepower.
PTO speed is stated as a percentage of engine speed. An example being the required pump speed of 1000 RPM and having an engine operating speed of 1500 RPM. The percentage of PTO to engine speed would be calculated to approximately two-thirds, or approximately 67 percent (e.g. 1000/1500 = 66.67, or 67%).
They are engine horsepower and PTO (Power-take-off) horsepower. Engine horsepower tells you the power that an engine produces. PTO horsepower tells you the amount of power available to run your various implements.
Most current-production tractors have the tachometer marked for the engine speed that will provide the 540-rpm or 1,000-rpm speeds for the PTO.
