Gas /oil mixture on a pioneer 1074 chain saw made in 1978
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
NOBODY will stick their neck out on this one. The original manual probably said 32:1, however the way I think about it is (most) two cycle engines haven’t changed in 50 years. Only the oil has. I will leave it up to you to figure out. GOOD LUCK

## How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Use a 40:1 two-cycle oil mix ratio. One gallon of gasoline combined with 3.2 oz of two-cycle engine oil. Unsure of the age of your equipment? Use the 40:1 mixture.
If your manufacturer recommends a 50:1 fuel/oil mix, it means you need 50 parts of gas to one part two-stroke oil. To mix one gallon of fuel at 50:1, add 2.6 ounces of two-stroke oil to one gallon of gas, as shown in the chart below.
For a mixing ratio of 1 : 50 you need 5 litres of petrol and 0.10 litres (100cm³) of STIHL two-stroke oil.
1:25 = 1 part oil + 25 parts petrol, or 40 ml oil per litre of petrol when using other brands of oil. Any two-stroke engine oil you use in your petrol gardening tool must have the TC classification.

For a 50:1 ratio of gas to oil, use 2.6 fluid ounces of oil per gallon of gas. For a 40:1 mixture, use 3.2 fluid ounces of oil per gallon of gas.

You want to mix 2.6 ounces of oil to one gallon of gasoline for a 50:1 mixture. If you`re mixing up two gallons of gasoline you will have to mix 5.2 ounces of oil to two gallons of gasoline for a 50:1 mixture. I would recommend using fresh gasoline that has an octane rating of 89.
You can do that but I wouldn`t 40 to 1 means 40 parts of gas one part of oil. 50 to1 means 50 parts of gas to 1 part of oil. So the 40 to 1 mixture is more oily and provides better lubrication for your piston rings.
Running a 2-cycle with the wrong fuel to oil mixture can cause severe damage to your engine. Running the machine without any oil mixed in the fuel can cause severe damage to your equipment within just minutes. This damage is generally very costly to repair and is usually irreparable.
The 50+1 rule guards against this. The name of the rule refers to the need for members of a club to hold 50 percent, plus one more vote, of voting rights – i.e. a majority. In short, it means that clubs – and, by extension, the fans – have the ultimate say in how they are run, not an outside influence or investor.
Twenty five to one (25:1) is one of the easiest 2 stroke ratios to calculate, you simply multiply the litre amount by 4 and add a zero.
40 to 1 ratio

If you are unsure 40:1 is a middle range 2 stroke fuel ratio. This equals 25mls of two stroke oil to 1 litre of petrol.

If you`re using a different brand of 2-Stroke oil, you`ll need to mix at 25:1 (40mls oil per 1 litre fuel). Petrol has limited shelf life (as low as 30 days), so always mix with fresh regular unleaded purchased from a reputable large volume fuel supplier.
To get an idea of how much oil you need; the gap between the marks on the dipstick usually represents around 1 litre of oil, so you know that if your oil mark was at the minimum, you need around a litre to top it up. If it`s only halfway down, you probably need around half a litre.

What happens if the mixing ratios in a 2 stroke engine are incorrect? If you put too much oil, it can generate additional carbon build-up, making it difficult to start the engine, blow excessive smoke which is particularly bad for the environment and may (with time) cause the engine to stop operating correctly.
All STIHL gasoline-powered equipment uses a 50:1 gas and oil mixture.
This ratio indicates how much fresh, regular unleaded gasoline (containing no more than 10% ethanol) to mix with how much oil. For all Remington 2-cycle products, the ratio is 40:1. This means you`ll want to add 3.2 oz of oil to every gallon of gasoline.
No. 1 Distillate: A light petroleum distillate that can be used as either a diesel fuel (see No. 1 Diesel Fuel) or a fuel oil.
TruFuel 50:1 mix is designed to work with 2-cycle outdoor power equipment that requires a 50:1 gas to oil ratio. TruFuel 2-cycle fuel is ethanol-free and formulated for hotter running, higher revving small engines. That means your 2-cycle equipment will run smoother and stronger with fewer false starts.
For 5 gallons of gas, with a 50:1 ratio, the amount of oil required is 12.8 US ounces (100 ml). Experts agree that it is better to err toward the side of too much oil, rather than not enough.
To make a 5:1dilution ratio for a gallon, we add the ratio numbers together like this: 5+1=6. Then, take 128oz and divide that by 6 and we get 21.3333333 ounces. So put 21.3oz of chemical in the container and fill the rest with water totaling 128oz to make a gallon of solution at a 5:1 dilution.
Mix at 50:1 (20mls oil per 1 litre fuel) when you`re using STIHL 2-Stroke oil. To prolong the life of your 2-Stroke fuel mix you can add STIHL fuel stabiliser to extend the fuel`s shelf life up to 12 months. 15ml of STIHL fuel stabiliser will treat 5 litres of fuel.
Gasoline that is 89 octane or higher is specifically recommended in engines that are two stroke and air cooled. Gasoline may contain a MAXIMUM of 10% Ethanol. Two stroke air cooled engines are approved to use a 87 octane rated clean gasoline in emergency situations.
The best fuel for 2-Cycle engines is an ethanol free fuel. At Cat 6 Tools we have determined the best fuel for 2-cycle engines is ethanol free and already mixed with the correct gas:oil ratio. One of the best fuels for 2-cycle engines is TruFuel, ethanol free gas already mixed with the right gas:oil mix.
