McCulloch
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Older model small gas engines used to have capacitors also known as condensers that you replaced as part of a routine tune-up along with the spark plug.
A tune-up kit usually contained a sparkplug, a set of points and a condenser(capacitor) and perhaps an air and/or gas filter. It has been a long, long time since I’ve seen one and I don’t even know if they still make them.
Modern mowers have pointless ignitions so there are no points to replace. The last tune-up kit I bought several years ago for a small Honda push mower did not include a condenser so I assume replacement of the capacitor is no longer necessary.
I do understand that a capacitor is part of modern ignition systems on small engines but they are not routinely replaced.
Frankly, I don’t know that condensers(capacitors) ever had problems. you just replaced them automatically with each tune-up because they came in the kit and they were cheap.
As I recall, they were located next to the points under a cap in the top of the flywheel on the lawn mowers I tuned up. I assume the capacitor, considering its function in the ignition system, is still in that location. The capacitor stores an electrical charge that causes the spark plug to fire, igniting the gas vapor in the engine when the pull cord is pulled or the starter button is pressed.
