How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Because when grass gets too long, your mower is forced to chop off way more than a ⅓ of each grass plant. This in turn will result in a clumping nightmare. That`s why we recommend you set the mower deck to around 3 and ½ inches and mow more often. Never remove more than one-third of the blades length at a time.
Use Mulching Blades

If you mow often enough, you`ll get tiny clips that quickly disappear into the lawn, especially if you`re using a mulching mower. Mulching mowers save a lot of time because clumping is greatly reduced and you won`t need to make an extra effort to gather the clippings.

Two main factors that influence grass to grow in clumps are moisture and soil conditions. If your lawn is irrigated more frequently than the soil can absorb, you`ll start to notice that grass grows in clumps. Another reason that grass might be growing in clumps is because of the type of soil you have.
The biggest reason for clumping grass is mowing when wet and or not mowing frequently enough. If you`re not mowing when grass is wet or trying to mow too much grass at once and your blade is sharp and motor is running fine then that really only leaves one thing. Make sure the underside of the mower deck is clean.
Lumpy lawns can come about due to a number of reasons. Improper use of irrigation, mowing methods, fertilization, and aeration could force lumps to arise. The more you take care of your grass, the thicker and healthier it will be.
Most of the time, dead or frazzled grass indicates you need to sharpen your lawn mower blade, especially if the problem is only on the tips of the leaves. A dull blade will shred the ends of the leaves and cause them to die back a little.
Stand the mower up on its side. Take a garden hose and spray the deck at full blast. This will loosen some of the dirt and caked-on grass clippings. Scrub off the rest of the soil, using a brush, soap, and hot water.
The WD-40 will keep most of the grass from building up and sticking, but you will still want to remove any detritus after your mowing session. This can be done with the wire brush mentioned above or a stainless steel mower blade, which can be found at your local hardware shops.
Check your grass bag isn`t clogged

If the lining of your grass bag is clogged with old grass you should clean it using a jet wash, air line or simply a brush and water. Once clean the air should flow through the grass bag more efficiently and improve the grass collection.

Why doesn`t my lawn tractor discharge grass properly? The underlying cause for improper grass discharge is lack of airflow through the deck. WET GRASS: Wet grass is heavy and the available air flow from a properly functioning mower is not sufficient to throw the wet clippings out of the deck.

String problem I am having a problem with my B&D Grass Hog weedeater and edger. The string will not advance. Please give suggestions on how to fix this problem. Just to inform you, I am woman, so your instructions may need to be made rather simply. LOL Thank you in advance for your assistance and I look forward to your answer as the grass is getting rather deep. Donna
ANSWER : Donna, take the spool that holds the string off. Look to see which wat the string is supposed to be wound onto the spool. If the string in on correctly, check to see if one or more of the turns of the string is overlaying itself. If there is overlap, clear it out by unwinding enough to unlap it. If the string is going the wrong way when you check it, remove and save the string from the spool, rewind it in the correct direction, put it back onto the machine and see if that corrects the problem. Woman or not, you are smart enough to ask, you are smart enough…Good luck…Lee
