What are valve clearances? Valve clearances on motorcycle and car engines effectively relate to the gap between the top of the valve stem and the cam that operates it. The inlet valves in the engine open to allow air and fuel into the cylinder, while the exhaust valves let the burnt gases out.
Position the dial indicator on the top of the exhaust-valve retainer and zero the dial indicator. Next depress the exhaust valve. Note the distance traveled. Now subtract the difference in the gasket thicknesses and you should have an accurate measurement of the piston-to-valve clearance.
If your engine generates a loud clatter, it could be time for a valve clearance adjustment, though a tapping noise could also be caused by a loose rocker arm or some other component; the mechanic won`t know for sure without inspecting the valves.
Rule of nine

With any given valve open, count what number valve that is from the front. Subtract that number from nine. Whatever number you`re left with is the valve you`re in position to set. So, with number 1 rocker opening its valve, you`ll be setting clearance on (9 minus 1), number 8 valve.

The “Rule of Thirteen” is used to know which valve to adjust on a 6 cylinder engine. If valve #1 is open (when the adjuster side of the rocker is up, and the spring side is down) then which valve do you adjust to get to a total of thirteen? The answer is valve #12.
If you notice that your engine is losing power when you start it or if you hear loud tapping or clicking sound when you start it, your valves may be out of adjustment. A rough idling time, especially before the car warms up, is another sign that your valves are out of adjustment.
Check – Slip the gauge blade between the rocker arm and valve tip. Move the gauge forward and back and feel the resistance. If you feel a nice amount of resistance, meaning, the gauge is snug but does move when you push on it – Your good, no need to adjust this valve. If you don`t feel any resistance, start adjusting.
If the valve clearance is too tight, then the valve will open earlier and close later then intended. If it too loose, the valve will open later and close earlier. The effect of setting the valve lash too tight can result in the valve not fully closing on the seat.
How often should you adjust the valve clearance? It depends on your particular situation. If you are just wondering about frequency and notice no symptoms, then every 60,000 miles or so. But it`s time for action when you hear cluttering and experience rough idling or oil consumption.
Based on the manufacturer`s manual, place the recommended gauge between the valve stem and rocker arm, and then adjust the tappet clearance by tightening or loosening the nut under the lock nut. The filler gauge should not feel very tight in the clearance; instead, it should be able to slide through the gap.
Tappet clearance is the clearance between the rocker arms and the point where they rest on the valves. Usually both the surfaces are flat surfaces. In four stroke engines, rockers arms arrangement opens and closes the inlet and outlet valves. But there is no direct connection between the two.
Major camshaft manufacturers recommend setting valves cold, to avoid erroneous adjustments on lifters that may be “pumped up” If you are setting valves on a fresh engine that has not been run, everything should be well lubricated before you begin.

Valve Clearance Tips
