17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor – CA Model

I am working on a Troybilt riding mower w/17.5 briggs engine and it is cutting out under load. I am a small engine mechanic so i have already cleaned carb(only one adjustment screw), replaced gas, plug, oil is good, new air filter…adjusted valves..looked at filter, fuel lines..I replaced electronic shut off on carb with a bolt….nothing helps. It happens when i engage the mower…or when I quickly shut off and restart. I am going nuts…..compression is good…I replaced coil and still no help…no matter where i adjust screw on carb it acts the same. Runs perfect until it goes under lo
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
A couple other checks would be to dump the carb resevoir where the float is, water under the float could be accumulated and closing the fuel off, due to density. out here on the farm we never use the gas to the last drop from the can. also the linkage between the motor fan blade, (govenor) might have been connected to the carb incorrectly. or a bad switch interlock on the mower blade.
some briggs motors are hooked wrong straight from the factory, where the throttle linkage is concerned. ( and the little spring is pretty hokey too)

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to run roughly. If the carburetor is clogged, try cleaning it with carburetor cleaner.
You Lose Power in the Middle of Mowing:

Here`s why this happens and what you can do: Dirty Air Filter on Your Lawn Mower: Clean or replace. Dirty Spark Plug: Clean or replace. Build Up of Clippings & Debris: Clean underside of your lawn mower deck as noted above.

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Clogged or Dirty Air Filters

It is one of the most common problems that cause lawnmowers to sputter. The mowers take the air from the surrounding through air filters and mix it with fuel inside the engine. So, if the air filter is clogged or dirty, it will affect the flow of air into the carburetor.

It can be caused by various factors, fuel injection problems, bad spark plugs, a malfunctioning air sensor, might be a dirty air filter, and troubles with the engine control. Other issues of the fuel ignition system can also trigger surging when stopped.
If the idle is rough, your vehicle is struggling to maintain a steady rate of rotation. This could be caused by a number of different problems, including dirty fuel injectors, clogged air filters, bad spark plugs, or exhaust system problems. A car that stalls can be extremely dangerous while on the road.
The common causes for rough running in an engine are: Engine miss. Vacuum leak. Dirty fuel injectors.
Stale fuel, dirt, and debris are the most common cause of outdoor power equipment not starting or running properly. If you store equipment with untreated gas in the tank, it can lead to engine damage.
A dirty air filter is one of the most common causes of a poorly running lawn mower, since it starves the engine of the oxygen needed for combustion. Fuel Filter: Check the fuel filter on the mower to make sure it`s clean, and replace it if needed.
Touch the metal shaft of a screwdriver to both of the large terminals at the same time. If the engine turns over and starts, the solenoid is bad and should be replaced. If the starter motor does not run, the motor itself is probably defective.
Lawn mower surging is a result of either bad gas or spark plug, dirty air filter, or clogged gas cap vent. A dirty carburetor jet and fuel filter might also be the reason. You can also consider a carburetor gasket leak, which can be fixed by an engine starter spray.

Hi there, quick question, there is a black and grey wire on the 13.5hp briggs and stratton, i am unsure which is the earth and which is the power?
ANSWER : The grey one should get power when the key is turned on. This opens the solenoid valve on the carb and lets fuel in. The black one should get earthed when the key is turned off, this shorts out the coil and stops the spark. Aussie Steve.
