It`s the clutch shoes engaging/disengaging the clutch drum. Perfectly normal.
Here`s why, over feeding the string will waste a lot of string, if you keep tapping, it keeps coming out, and getting cut by the blade on your trimmer head. You could literally run out of string by just feeding more string too often. Practice feeding, only when you need it.
If the line is too thick or too thin it can continuously feed the line. Make sure you are using the correct line thickness rated for your machine. The spool houses the line for the trimmer and has the line wound around it. It is located inside the trimmer head.
The two-cycle gas engines used on many string-type weed trimmers require a mixture of gasoline and oil to keep the crankshaft and piston lubricated. Efficient operation requires the correct mix of gas to oil.
When the clapper strikes, the bell begins to move quickly back and forth or vibrate and push the molecules in the air back and forth to form sound `waves`. Sound needs a medium to travel through, such as air which is made up of molecules that vibrate and conduct the sound.
When your trimmer starts and runs on choke, it could be because the check valve in the gas cap is clogged. Start the trimmer and gently unscrew the gas cap halfway off. Turn the choke off and assess. If the engine is still running, that means the gas cap may be the culprit.
This can have a big impact on how well your weed whacker performs. Using the wrong size can result in poor cutting performance and even damage to your equipment. A line that`s too thin may break or wear out quickly, while a line that`s too thick may put too much strain on your engine or cause other issues.
With repeated use over time coarse hair can cause blade tips to become very sharp and pointy. Skip tooth blades are very prone to being “sharpened” by coarse hair. Careful! They can literally make slices in the animals skin if they are sharp enough.
Attaching any weighted material to the vibrating trimmer will help to diminish the noise level. Temporarily, you could use one or more thick elastic bands or tape around the trimmer handle to attach extra weight with something of convenient size.
Loose Screws The shaft on a Stihl trimmer connects to the power head generally through four screws. The vibration on the engine can gradually shake loose even tightly screwed-in bolts. For this reason, Stihl recommends checking for loose screws and other parts after every use, so you can spot them early and tighten.
Trimmer line does tend to dry out over time and becomes more brittle. Storing it or soaking it in water will help reduce line breakage and make the line more flexible. Be sure to deplete your supply of last year`s line before you purchase new line and begin using it.

My weed eater hedge trimmer runs for about 10 minutes and cuts off. It seems as though it is flooded, because it won’t start again until some time later. But it continues with the same pattern. I purchased a can of premixed gas/oil to make sure it was my mixture, to no avail. I have not replaced the spark plug yet, but I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Do you have any suggestions?
ANSWER : The plug can be the problem but also the air mix as well get the best plug you can
Weed eater will start but the head will not rotate. its like some thing is not connected.

From your Description it Sounds like the Shaft May have Slipped Out of the Power Head and the Drive Cable is Not Engaged to the Drive, the Clutch is Worn Out, the Drive Cable is Worn and Requires Replacing, the Trimmer Head has Slipped and is Not Engaged to the Drive Cable or the Trimmer Head Gearbox is Bad and Requires Replacing.

STRING KEEPS BREAKING ON A TROY BILT WEED EATER TB539E
ANSWER : Take a look at the hole in the spool where the business end of the string comes through. There should be a smooth metal grommet or smooth short tube there. If the metal is missing, then the string is breaking because it rubs against plastic and heats up very quickly. Or the tube or grommet might have a rough or sharp spot. You might be able to polish it up with a Dremmel type of tool.
My stihl weed eater fs85 hard to start when hot
ANSWER : Try loosening the gas cap to relieve any pressure, then tightening it back up. Usually you will just need to barely unscrew it and then screw it back even before you pull the rope.

Weed eater will not run in high speed but will idle
ANSWER : Lack of fuel is my first thought. Check to be sure the trigger control is working at the carb. From there I would suspect plugged fuel line or plugged carb, (most likely contaminated fuel) either way I would suggest someone that knows about these. Hope this helps
