the gas/oil mix?
Garden

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Don’t use any fuel that is over 30 days old. It loses its volatility and absorbs moisture and creates gum and varnish. Only use OLD fuel that has had fuel stabilizer added to it. To give you the proper gas/oil mix without knowing what machine you have, suffice it to say it is 40:1 or 50:1. Here is a chart explaining how much oil you add in a gallon of gas. To mix a half gallon use one-half the amount of oil stated. And GET RID of that old fuel mix!

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

What happens if the mixing ratios in a 2 stroke engine are incorrect? If you put too much oil, it can generate additional carbon build-up, making it difficult to start the engine, blow excessive smoke which is particularly bad for the environment and may (with time) cause the engine to stop operating correctly.
If you realise that your mix isn`t right, the best thing is to stop your machine and drain the fuel. Mix some fuel that is at the correct ratio, clean any air filters and make good. If it is an incorrect mixture over a prolonged time then it`s not good news.
Most STIHL gasoline-powered equipment runs on a 50:1 mixture of gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil.
With gas string trimmers, it`s important to check and add oil if the levels are low. Make sure to only add oil to the fill line. Overfilling the tank can damage the internal parts. You should also change the oil regularly.
Running a 2-cycle with the wrong fuel to oil mixture can cause severe damage to your engine. Running the machine without any oil mixed in the fuel can cause severe damage to your equipment within just minutes. This damage is generally very costly to repair and is usually irreparable.
What Happens if I Use Too Much Oil? Or Not Enough? Using the proper oil-to-gas ratio is important, but if you`re off, it`s better to mix too much oil into your engine than mixing too little oil. Excess oil can produce a smoky exhaust, oil leaking out of the muffler, and sometimes loss of power.
Mixing Your Fuel

Your strimmer runs off a mix of semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil and unleaded petrol (40:1).

Basically, it is still fine changing to another fuel if just for one time filling only during an empty tank situation. The reason is, all types of fuel have the same constituent elements on the hydrocarbon chain, so it is relatively safe if 1-2 types of fuel mixed in one tank.
Use a 40:1 two-cycle oil mix ratio. One gallon of gasoline combined with 3.2 oz of two-cycle engine oil. Unsure of the age of your equipment?
The recommended ratio of fuel mix is 1 part oil to 50 parts petrol. For example, if you are using 5L of petrol, you will need 0.1L (100ml) of 2 Stroke Oil. To mix the fuel, pour the 2 Stroke engine oil into a mixing can that is approved for use with fuel, then add the petrol.
