How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If your power washer leaks water from the connection between the hose and inlet, the seal and possibly the coupling on the inlet are likely broken and will need to be replaced. This seal and coupling should be fairly easy to remove and replace.
If your pressure washer starts and runs fine, but there`s no pressure or no water coming from the pump, it could be a clogged wand, hose or inlet filter. Fortunately, this is an easy pressure washer problem to repair. Begin isolating the problem by hooking a water hose to the washer`s inlet and turning it on.
Yes – you can use soap with a pressure washer, provided your machine has a detergent tank where you can add your soap. Not every pressure washer does, but these days, they`re becoming more and more commonplace as we recognize the power detergent has in our cleaning regimens.
When the soap reservoir is situated beneath the counter or hand pump, it has to be drawn up to the nozzle. In this case, the main reason for soap dripping is when a bit of soap is left close to the end of the nozzle and slowly falls away after use.
Currently what I do is melt the soap and then put the melted soap into a vacuum chamber. This draws the water out by vacuum. You cannot boil the water out of the soap at atmospheric pressure because that would damage the soap by the high heat.
Although you can technically use any power washer nozzle for soap, the black nozzle is the best and most commonly used. Because it has a larger orifice, it decreases the velocity of the water, increasing the pressure in the hose. This makes it easier for the hose to pull in detergent from the tank.
Step 2: Choose a pressure washer safe detergent. If you are using soap that is thick (thicker than water itself), you will need to dilute it with water. If you choose a detergent that is pressure washer safe, thinning should not be required.
In general, an additional pump won`t be necessary between your water tank and pressure washer if there`s enough pressure and water but if the current water pressure is insufficient, then an additional pump will be needed.
Effects of Using Too Much Laundry Detergent

Using too much detergent in a front load washer makes the washer work harder to remove excess suds, making malfunctions more likely. These suds can also block the washer`s draining system, impairing its ability to pump out water and leaving more suds behind.

Pre-washing with the right detergent helps to begin breaking down the algae, rust, dirt, or oil stain before pressure is even applied. Pressure washing without detergent is like showering without soap. Sure, water and scrubbing will get the job done, but it`s not the same without soap!
But don`t try to stretch your dollar by watering down a bottle of soap. Adding water to a soap can ruin the preservatives and contaminate the bottle. Bacteria may start to grow, and you could wind up with more germs on your hands than you had at the start, Larson said.
The microbes begin to slowly grow. The manufacturer puts in antimicrobial ingredients, but by the time most soap is used up, the protection diminishes. The emulsion formula of the soap base cracks, separates and becomes watery. It does not harm the soap`s ability to clean.
“Leaving soap on your skin can cause your skin to develop dryness, and can trigger conditions such as eczema,” she says. Basically, if you don`t rinse away the soap, it does more harm than good to your complexion.
Soap molecules have hydrophilic heads — meaning they cling to water molecules — and tails that are hydrophobic — which means “water-fearing.” When immersed in water, the soap molecules form into tiny balls, called micelles, with their hydrophobic tails pointed inwards.
The surfactant molecules of the detergent break apart these forces and make water behave, well, wetter!
Infrared sensors detect infrared energy that is emitted by one`s body heat. When hands are placed in the proximity of the sensor, the infrared energy quickly fluctuates. This fluctuation triggers the pump to activate and dispense the designated amount of soap.

Soap feed The soap feed hose on my Karcher 2650 does not suck up the soap into the washer. I pulled off the connector piece that the hose is connected to. I can blow through the hose. There is a little metal finger thing that you can tell pushes up into place when the water pressure is high. It seems like it is supposed to drop down and allow some soap through when the water is running. I found a loose(attached to nothing) gasket, looks like a little donut. It was just free floating in there. I’m thinking it may go over the finger mechanism. I just put it back on top of the finger, like a halo and put the screw in piece back in. Anyway, if you know, let me know how all that goes together.

Kranzle electric washer will not suck up soap
ANSWER : Hi, if it has a chemical injector on the machine then the pressure at the lance will have to be lowered for it to pull in soap. it works on a similar principle to how carburetors on cars pull in fuel, bernouli principle. high pressure at one side of an orifice going to low pressure at the other side which causes a negative pressure ( vacuum) which should pull in the soap. there should be a non return valve at the orifice (hole) which prevents the water back feeding into the soap container, it is quite common for this valve to get stuck, it is just a ball, spring and o ring , and the ball sticks to the o ring. if it is this system then take the soap pick up pipe off the injector and just push the ball off it’s seat with a bit of wire.If it is a high pressure soap system then that is different, but they usually work with an injector in my experience.try taking the high pressure hose off the front off the machine and running it, if it has an injector on it it should pull in plenty off soap.hope this helps ,andy

Need help in getting Honda engine on NorthStar pressure washer to run.
ANSWER : Could be low water pressure I have found. Also, I purchased a can of “stuff” at Lowes today which allows you to circulate a liquid substance which lubricates the pressure pump….the pump could be frozen up…I have a rotating nozzle which I bought…and it had frozen up…this stuff works

1750 psi Electric Pressure Washer: My pressure washer is losing pressure and is pulsa…
ANSWER : If the pressure washer is pulsating then that is a sign of check valve failure. You may be able to clean of replace the check valves. Replacing the head is the wrong way to go. This is completely unnecessary. If you can tell me the model number of your pressure washer then I can assist you better in pointing you in the right direction.

Will not siphon
ANSWER : This model pressure washer will only siphon from the soap dispenser when you have the low-pressure nozzle attached and then will only sort of dribble out the suds. Good for sudsing, but no good for cleaning. You’ll have to suds 1st then change to a highwe pressure spray nozzle to perform the actual cleaning. If it won’t siphon with the low pressure nozzle either, then check for a blockage (old, dried soap) in the suction line tubing. Hope this helps!!

No pressure Pump reassembly. I purchased a new pump and installed it. Got machine back together and I’m not getting any pressure. What would be the signs if I don’t have the shaft key in properly? Or any other suggestions?
Water comes out of nozzle with pressure for a quick second then no pressure, just water. This is a brand new pump so was curious if I installed it wrong. Wondering before taking it apart again.
ANSWER : No pressure would be a sign that the key was not in properly.

I have used the McCulloch (FH180A) three times over the course of two years. On my fourth use the pressure washer just surged on and off and I would get a tiny spray from the gun each time it surged. In other words it would do nothing. Please help… very frustrated. Thanks
ANSWER : Sounds like the problem could be low input water flow or pressure. There could be crud on the intake where you hook up the garden hose, there could be some other sort of blockage. Try hooking it up to the hose and pull the trigger (with the power switched off) and wait to see if water comes out the tip. Also look at the tip(s) themselves. sometimes a piece of crud gets into the hose and then clogs the tip.
