How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Snow blower model numbers are located on the backside of the metal base between the left and right rear-wheels. The 11-character model number is printed on the left side of the Product Identification Label and will begin with the letters “CM”.
A common issue is a clogged carburetor from stale gas. Using a fuel stabilizer keeps fuel fresh and the carburetor from gumming and varnishing. Third step, check the ignition system with a spark tester. Step four, replace the spark plug and reconnect the spark plug wire.
Where to Locate Your Model. When standing behind the unit, the product identification label can be found in the center or right-hand side of the base of the unit where the handle bars attach.
Check the Spark Plug and Ignition System

Fuel on the Spark Plug: If there`s fuel on your spark plug it likely means you flooded your snowblower engine trying to start it, so simply clean the fuel off of your spark plug.

A correctly maintained and stored snowblower can last twenty-plus years before requiring major mechanical repairs. At the very least, changing the engine oil once per season and using a gas stabilizer when storing will help protect your snowblower`s vital components.
To Choke or Not to Choke

If your snow blower is cold, you`ll want to pull out or turn on the choke while you`re starting it. This closes off the air supply to your carburetor, which makes for a much richer fuel mixture. If your snow blower is stored in a heated garage and is warm enough, you should not use the choke.

Remember the choke is closed for starting.

Close it fully for cold conditions or a cold engine. Close it only 1/2 or 3/4 for temps of 30 degrees or warmer. And don`t close it if you`re restarting the snowblower less than five minutes after engine shut off.

Can I use a grade 8 bolt to replace the shear pin? No. Damage to the unit will occur if a higher grade bolt is used in place of the original.
Craftsman (MTD)

For example, if the Date Code is 5240, the first character, 5, identifies the Year. The last 3 digits identify the sequential day within the year, nnn of 365. So, 5240 gives a build date of the 240th day in 1995 or August 28, 1995.

Brass 1/4″ shear bolts are most commonly used on smaller, entry-level snowblowers. Black 5/16″ shear bolts are for larger mid-grade snowblowers. Silver 5/16″ shear bolts are the most durable and are used on professional-grade snowblowers.
These shear bolts are classified as a grade 2 bolt, which are hard enough to maintain auger rotation, yet soft enough to shear if the auger is prevented from rotating.
To Determine Manufacture Date Based on Serial Number: The 1st three numbers of your serial number will always provide your manufacture date. The 1st number is the YEAR of manufacture; the 2nd & 3rd numbers indicate the MONTH of manufacture. Please see the detailed explanation and examples provided below.
The Model number is eleven characters long and is printed on the left side of the Product Identification Label. Characters can include numbers, letters or hyphens.
What are serial and model numbers? Model and serial numbers are used to identify a specific product. The model number differentiates between models of devices—for example, iPhone® 13 and iPhone X. Many devices can share a model number, which means they`re the same model.
The model number and serial number information can be found by standing behind the snow blower and leaning down.
Engine sizes

From consumer-grade snow blower engines that are 200 cc, to midsize 200 to 400 cc engines, to professional-grade 400+ cc engines, engine size is an important factor to consider since it determines how much horsepower your snow blower produces and how much gas it consumes.

Yes, synthetic oil can be used, and it may be the best oil for a snow blower. Synthetic oils are refined to run cleaner, leaving fewer deposits in the engine. Many also include additives that clean grime and sludge from the engine to improve performance.
Can Mobil 1™ be used in lawn mowers, snow blowers and other small cylinder engines? Yes, if the small engines are four‐cycle engines that call for detergent‐type motor oil. This type of engine has a separate crankcase for motor oil – it`s not mixed with gasoline. I like to change the oil myself.
The impeller propels the snow through the chute. If the impeller is not jammed or broken, the snowblower won`t blow the snow. If the impeller is broken, replace it.
Damaged augers or impeller

The impeller works like a fan to propel the snow up and out of the chute. When these components are damaged, the snowblower won`t shoot snow out of the chute very far. Replace any damaged augers or the impeller if necessary.

Modern snowblowers are made with 4-stroke engines, but if you have a cherished snowblower from years ago, you`ve dealt with trying to get the perfect fuel mixture for a 2-stroke engine.
Storing a Snowblower Outside

However, it`s always best to store your snowblower in a clean, dry area, so consider keeping it in a storage unit if you don`t have a garage or shed. It`s time to breathe a sigh of relief—you`re done fighting mounds of snow for another year.

Change The Oil

Check your manual for the details but it is generally recommended about once a year.
