Spreaders are used to evenly distribute fertilizer and grass seed across your lawn. There are two types: drop and broadcast, also known as a rotary spreader.
Drop spreaders have rectangular hoppers that taper to a series of equally spaced holes arranged in a row (Figure 3). Most models have a rotating agitator just above the holes to ensure the uniform flow of the product.
Rotary lawn spreaders
A rotary lawn spreader will have a bucket-like hopper sitting higher off the ground than a drop spreader, the product is dropped out of the base of the hopper and it then lands in a spinning distribution disc which then flings the product out to cover a wider area.
Spreader calibration consists of two processes. First, the spread pattern must be adjusted to distribute the fertilizer particles uniformly. Second, the amount of fertilizer spread over the desired area must be measured and adjusted, if necessary, to equal the recommended application rate.
The three types of lawn spreaders are scoop-style spreaders, broadcast spreaders and handheld spreaders. Handheld spreaders distribute fertilizer, seeds or ice melt over small areas. Broadcast-type handheld spreaders have a small hopper, handle, dial and crank. Some models offer adjustable arm support.

Cell Spreaders, Polypropylene/Sterile
Disposable, red L-shaped, cell spreaders are ideal for spreading bacterial cultures evenly; the L-shape allows application on the entire petri dish or plate surface. Smooth spreading surface with slight upward return reduces the risk of damaging agar sample.
