Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower
I have a troy bilt lawnmower, model – 12a-466m011 that will not start. It appears to have an automatic choke (there is no choke bulb). The mower has not been used for a year, so I dumped the gas tank, removed the carb and dumped the gas in the bowl and the tubes in the carb appear to be clean and free of debris. When I reassembled it still will not start, but if a spray starter fluid in the carb, the engine will fire and turn over until the spray runs out. It should be getting gas, but it still doesn’t start
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
In most cases it’s not enough to just dump the gas out of the float bowl. The problem is that the gas has turned to varnish and varnish is sticky. It will put a nice coating over all the the interior of the carb. The only way to clean it is to dismantle it completely. This means removing the float bowl and float. Along with the needle. The important thing is that both the float and needle move freely and both the high and low idle screws are clean. Depending on the type of fuel filter you may also need to remove and clean it as well. If it is not an inline filter it most likely is located inside the tank. As long as your careful not to tear the float bowl gasket you shouldn’t require a rebuild kit for the carb.Hope this helps.

Your Mower Won`t Start:
Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.
Your lawn mower turning over but not starting due to several reasons, such as a faulty or disconnected plug, a disconnected spark plug wire, a clogged air filter, or a contaminated fuel tank. A faulty carburetor, a dirty cutting deck, or a dysfunctional flywheel brake can also cause this.
The fuse used on most of our riding mowers is a 20 ampere, 12 volt, automotive-type, two-prong, flat-blade fuse ( a.k.a. SAE ATC® style). Our service part # 925-1381, and is available at our Online Parts Store.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
The most common signs of bad spark plugs include start-up trouble, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel economy, engine misfiring, and engine knocking.
The clicking noise comes from a part called the starter solenoid. The solenoid connects the battery to the starter motor when the solenoid is energized. The key switch and the safety switches in the starter circuit combine to energize the solenoid. If the solenoid is clicking, the circuit that triggers it is working.
Inspect the V-belt for damage and replace it with a new one if necessary. Damaged control cable – A broken, or misadjusted, control cable will prevent the mower from self-propelling as well. If the cable is intact but doesn`t move freely, you can try applying a small amount of lubrication to the cable.
Self-propelled mowers are available in single and variable speed models. They work by engaging a speed control lever (sometimes part of the handle; sometimes a separate bar or shifter) that causes the mower to move forward.
