How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

When a spark plug becomes fouled, the tips become coated with fuel, carbon, oil or dirt. This interference limits the ignition power needed for mowing on level or uphill surfaces. Maintain your spark plugs by changing them every season or regularly removing and cleaning the tips.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
There are a few common causes as to why a Craftsman riding lawn mower may be going slower than it should, ranging from a worn drive belt, clogged air filter, or even a loose or missing blade. Troubleshooting these issues can help you get your lawn mower back to its normal speed.
If the engine will idle but dies at full throttle the main jet in the carburetor may be plugged. You can repair a plugged main jet by cleaning it, replacing the jet, or replacing the carburetor. If you choose to clean or replace the main jet, you will also want to clean the rest of the carburetor.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

The air filter cleans the air before it is drawn into the carburetor and when it does its job properly, may get clogged up with debris removed from the air. A clogged air filter may not allow a sufficient amount of air into the carburetor, reducing the power of the engine.

Simply change the filter to give your mower more thrust. Finding the air filter should be easy as it is located on the left side of the mower`s engine. You can have it cleaned or you can opt to buy a new one. Treat your lawn mower`s engine the same way you treat you car`s engine.
Whenever the blade is engaged, it rotates on a crankshaft to cut the grass. But if there is interference in this rotation, the engine can overload and shut off or lose power. Check the crankshaft connection to see if it rotates freely. Inspect the connecting hardware for damage or rust.

Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself.
Check the Air Filter: The most common reason why an engine bogs out under acceleration is because the air/fuel mixture is `dirty` or inefficient. If the air filter is clogged or has a lot of dirt in it, it could be bogging down the engine. Clean the air filter and see if the problem goes away.
Run it at full throttle

A: Absolutely–and in fact, you should! You are correct in observing that your cut quality is better when your mower operates at full throttle. Lawn equipment (including lawn mowers, lawn tractors, and even trimmers and blowers) is designed to run at full throttle to give the best performance.

Lawn mower surging is a result of either bad gas or spark plug, dirty air filter, or clogged gas cap vent. A dirty carburetor jet and fuel filter might also be the reason. You can also consider a carburetor gasket leak, which can be fixed by an engine starter spray.
The mower surges when the carburetor sucks air through an unsealed gap in the air intake manifold instead of through the air filter. Dirty carburetor. Clogged fuel jets inside the carburetor commonly cause the lawn mower engine to surge. Clogged jets can`t provide the right mix of air and fuel to the engine.
