So what is a lawn mower transaxle? A mower trans-axle is a single mechanical assembly that combines the functions of transmission, differential, and axle. The word trans-axle describes both the type of transmission and the axle set up in a vehicle.
A transaxle is a case that contains both the transmission components, differential and the drive axles. We generally use transaxle and transmission interchangeably when talking about todays lawn tractors because all of them use one case to house the transmission, differential and axles.
Three primary transmission systems are used in riding mowers and the various classes of mowing tractors. Mower decks are designed to operate at a constant speed – typically full engine speed.
Both manual and automatic transaxles are available. Manual transaxle uses a friction clutch and a standard transmission-type gearbox. An automatic transaxle uses a torque converter and a hydraulic system to control gear engagement.
This simplifies the vehicle`s driveline as the driveshaft doesn`t have to connect to a differential before power is sent to the wheels. Cars with transaxles often weigh less as they have fewer drivetrain components. Transaxles are usually found on vehicles with a front engine and FWD or a rear engine and RWD.
A downside of transaxle in most practical applications is that it robs boot space but with the shift towards run-flat tyres and no spare wheel this may become less of a problem. Also expensive to build on the production line as engine/transmission cannot be installed as a single unit.
Purpose. An automatic transmission/transaxle changes the engine`s speed and torque in relation to the speed and torque of the drive wheels. This keeps the engine`s output matched as close as possible to varying road speeds and loads.
