How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself. In the transmission section of your operator`s manual, you`ll find a section that covers oil viscosity.
Grinding gears, starting and stopping during operation, and the wheels not rotating with the pulley are common signs that your mower`s transmission is breaking down.
One of the disadvantages of hydrostatic drives is that the majority of the oil stays in the loop and doesn`t return to the reservoir for cooling. One way to return some of the oil back to the tank is by using a hot oil shuttle valve.
To fix a riding mower that won`t move forward or reverse, you should fix the battery, check for the air filter and carburetor, inspect the transmission for damages, replace the damaged drive belt, and inspect the spark plug. You must also replace the tires, and adjust the wheel position.
Over time, dirt, debris and other tiny particles can accumulate in the transmission fluid, affecting its fluid properties. This can cause the vehicle to die when you shift into drive or reverse, allow a loss of power, transmission slip, rough shifts or even prevent the vehicle from shifting into gear at all.
Although cavitation is much more common with hydraulic systems, it can also seriously damage hydrostatic transmissions. Caused when gases in the fluid vaporize, it`s characterized by noisy, erratic transmission operation.
They are filled with the specified pump fluid to match each pump design and then sealed by each manufacturer at their factories. Replacing hydrostatic fluid is normally not necessary, unless the drive system is in need of some other internal service or repair.

I have a Husqvarna YTH 2242 TDF Ride-on-mower/Yard Tractor.Have you ever come across a problem with driving after re-engaging the transmission?

I disengaged the transmission to push the tractor in my garage a few days ago.

Today I re-engaged the transmission. At first it wouldn’t reverse, then I repeated the operation and all was well…I thought.

I set off towards my lawn…up a small slope, and towards the top of the slope eased off on the forward drive pedal, while deciding which way to go, and the tractor slowed, and stopped. Then, to start moving forward again I pressed the forward drive pedal. But, the tractor had no forward drive…nor did it have any Brake pedal. There was just nothing ……and the tractor rolled back down the slope, quite quickly, gathering speed, backwards. Luckily it is not much of a slope and it came to rest on the flat again. When I tried the Forward drive to set off again, it worked…and the brake worked too. I thought I must simply have panicked somehow. So I set off again…and at the top of the slope, again paused…eased off on the forward drive……..and again the same thing happened. No forward drive, no brakes!
Has anyone encountered this problem before?
and …does the brake pedal operate on the transmission somehow, rather than on the road wheels?
Many thanks

ANSWER : Hello! There are two known faults with the Husqvarna YTH…# 1 is the drive belt slipping…The belts have a manufacturing defect, in that they are out of specification in length…After some usage slipping occurs…#2 is a brake recall which is described below…It refers to the 19.5 HP 42″ cut but the 46″ cut utilizes the same braking mechanism…Guru…saailerBrake Recall.

I have a craftsman 24 hp 54 ” tractor with a automatic transmission and its about 8 years old. It was running and moving fine when i put it away for the winter and had no problems. When I took it out for the first time this year it seems to be making a whinning noise (louder than normal) from the transmission when driving. Also after driving about 100 feet or so it slows to a halt. I checked the drive belt and it doesnt seem to be slipping, tried to check the transmission fluid but its sealed and there are no signs of any leaks. Not realy sure what else to do other than throw a belt on and hope for the best. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
ANSWER : Hello, It is not likely the belt. The only thing you can do is do a purge and see if that helps. Doing a purge is really easy:

put transmission in the freewheel mode so you can push it, ensuring that it is on a flat surface
start engine and run full throttle
release clutch brake
push the drive pedal or lever to the full forward position for a ten count
push the drive pedal or lever to the full reverse position for a ten count
repeat steps 4 & 5 three times
depress & lock the clutch brake
return the transmission to the normal mode
drive tractorIf this fails to correct the problem you may need to replace the transaxle. If you find this helpful please vote yes. Thank You!!

My 3 year old Husqvarne YTH20B42 has a Tuff Torq K46 transaxle. I have read that there have been significant problems with this transaxle and I am having the typical problems others have written about. The transaxle whines when moving and after the transaxle warms up the mower’s forward movement is labored. It would not move forward at all until I changed the drive belt. The replacment cost for the transaxle is $750 USD, which is about 50% of the new cost of the mower. I have not been able to find a rebuilt transaxle and reports of installing rebuild kits has extended the life of the transaxle only 1.5 years.

Is there anywhere I can get a rebuilt transaxle or do I just need to junk this mower and by another (you can bet that it will not be a Husqvarna!).
