My sears gt5000 only runs when choke is pulled
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
A gas engine runs on a mixture of gas and air. Too much air, not enough fuel, and you have to decrease air to maintain balance….
Many things could cause this, clogged fuel filter, gas cap not venting, old/defective gas line, dirty carburetor…. If “popping” is involved, there is too much water in the gas.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Why would the engine only run while the choke is on or with repeated manual priming? An engine that requires the choking (partial or full) after initial engine warm up is an indication that the engine fuel air mixture system is out of adjustment.
Why Does Your Lawn Mower Only Run With Choke On? Your lawn mower only runs with choke on because of a problem with the engine fuel-air mixture system, which can be caused by the carburetor, bad fuel, or air leaks. The choke compels more fuel in the combustion chamber to help the engine to turn over when cold.
Its common for small engines to need carburetor adjustments over time. Your engine is running lean and putting the choke on partially is helping it draw more fuel to run good. Adjust the carb if its adjustable or buy a new carb. You can find info on carb tuning in small engine service books.
We do not recommend that any type of outdoor power equipment be operated after initial warm-up and with the choke control outside of the normal run position for longer than 5 minutes. Some engines utilize a manual fuel primer bulb to enrich the ratio of fuel in the fuel air mixture for initial engine starting.
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.
A choke valve is sometimes installed in the carburetor of internal combustion engines. Its purpose is to restrict the flow of air, thereby enriching the fuel-air mixture while starting the engine.
If your carburetor is clogged, it can cause your leaf blower`s engine to die when the choke is disengaged. You can disassemble it, clean it, and replace individual parts with a carb kit. Once your carburetor has been unclogged, cleaned, and re-assembled using the carb kit, the engine should run with the choke off.
A snowblower that runs better on half choke likely suffers from a dirty or faulty carburetor. Cleaning or replacing the carburetor will fix the issue.
With the choke on, the fuel blasts its way in and provides the carburetor with the fuel it needs. While this is relatively safe and doesn`t harm any of the internal parts of the bike, it does lead to higher consumption of fuel.
The choke, a butterfly valve, reduces the intake of air and allows a fuel-rich charge to be drawn into the cylinders when a cold engine is started.
Choking and attempting to re-start an already warmed engine will result in too much fuel and will prevent a warm engine from re-starting. If it is suspected that the engine may still be warm enough to re-start after a short break, such as less than 15 minutes or so, try re-starting it with the choke off.
What to Do If Your Tractor Won`t Start, Just Clicks. If your John Deere won`t crank and all you hear are clicking sounds when you turn the key, you likely have a bad battery or a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter. Double check that the alternator and battery connections are clean and tight.
Yes, but only until the engine is warm enough to run without the choke. This unusually less than a minute. For most motorcycles it`s full choke to start, then half choke – just enough to keep it running, then off completely when warm.

A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

Have to run on half choke, just stops if i turn it off.fuel is 25 to 1. thanks alan.
ANSWER : More than likely a small passage way in the carb is clogged. You can try some carb cleaner, but you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it out. Be advised that these passageways are sometimes as fine as a human hair, and almost impossible to clear sometimes. A new carb may be required if it is worth it to you. Sorry.

ANSWER : It may simply need the high speed jet opening up a bit (2 screws near eachother on the carb and the high speed is furthest from the engine)failing that it needs a carb kit…. this is a serviceable item changed regularly.
