How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The pulleys in your lawn tractor are driven by the drive belt, and turn the spindles. If a pulley doesn`t spin freely, it can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check the pulleys for sticking and damage, first remove the drive belt from the engine pulley and lift the lever to engage the blades.
Worn or broken blade drive belt – If the riding mower blades are not spinning, the blade drive belt may be worn or broken and unable to engage the blades. If the belt is intact, inspect it to see if it`s loose or slipping on the pulleys then replace it with a new one if necessary.
Your Mower Won`t Start:

Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.

The reasons why mower is not moving forward or reverse is that the battery is dead, or due to clogged fuel line. Additionally, malfunctioning transmission, or a broken drive belt, also a faulty spark plug, even when friction wheel isn`t in contact with the friction plate, or damaged Tires.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged

If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.

Briggs And Stratton Lawn Mower Engine Locked Up

Common causes of this type of engine lock-up include a lack of oil in the engine, incorrect fuel and spark plug misfiring.

Tractor may be starving for fuel.

Sometimes the fuel cap prevents the fuel tank from breathing. The fuel tank can develop a vacuum. This could cause fuel to stop running to the engine – causing it to stall. If this is the case, give it an hour or two, and the tank pressure will reset and equalize.

What to Do If Your Tractor Won`t Start, Just Clicks. If your John Deere won`t crank and all you hear are clicking sounds when you turn the key, you likely have a bad battery or a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter. Double check that the alternator and battery connections are clean and tight.
Grinding gears, starting and stopping during operation, and the wheels not rotating with the pulley are common signs that your mower`s transmission is breaking down.
If the blades are engaged and you shift to reverse the mower is designed to either shut off the blades or the engine. Some units have ROS, this is an additional position on the key switch that can be activated if the operator feels the need to mow in reverse.
Dull, damaged or loose blades. If your blades are not sharp, are damaged or are not properly attached, this may also cause the engine to stop, especially when cutting thicker grass. Making sure the blades are in good condition and are properly attached should also be a part of your annual mower tune-up in the spring.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
If the mowing deck is engaged and the unit is in reverse, the mower will shut down as part of a safety feature.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.

Tractor runs, but cuts off if you try to engage the blades (and not in the usual hesitant way it did normally if the engine speed was not high enough at first start)
ANSWER : Had same problem on my 115 automatic. Tried lots of things but the fix was replacing the coil making sure for proper spacing. Documents with new coil will tell you and should have a card with proper spacing. Instant power, instant fix! Good luck!

Cranks up and runs fine ,then starts cutting out then runs fine and starts cutting out again
ANSWER : I am no pro but my suggestion to you is if you have changed your spark plug recently check the gap on it and make sure it is right and make sure is the right spark plug for it. Also check the oil if it is low the motor as it gets hot will start to sputter or if it has to much oil it will have an air lock and blow you Lhead gasket after a while. Another thing to check is the air filter to make sure it is clean and check the timing with this if you don’t trust your self ask an repair expert for your brand of mower.

When I hold the bar down that engages the blade it will not cut?
ANSWER : Is the blade sharp?

I have a TORO XL380H Lawn Mower. When cutting long grass yesterday, the engine cuts out, as it often does when encountering grass that’s too long. I normall restart the engine, move teh mower to shorter grass, re-engage the baldes and off I go. This time, when I re-engaged the blades, it immediately cut out again. Assuming, there was probably long grass tangled in the blades, I restarted the mower, drove around a bit and then tried re-engaging the blades (by pulling out the PTO button). This time, they appeared to engage (the engine normally splutters slightly and the tractor jolts as they engage) but they almost immediately disengaged (you can tell by the engine noise). Also, when engaged, I am unable to get the ‘Keychoice’ function to work. This suggests to me the blades are not engaged. Help!

I started the mower but the blades will not turn. I shut it off and was able to manually turn the blades by hand. I also was able to turn the belt wheel under the engine and have it turn the blades. With it running and me on the seat, they don’t turn. With it running; brake engaged; and I pull the mower switch to engage them, the mower wants to die. Two questions: Is there a swtich on the seat to insure the blades can not turn while no one is on the seat? Is there a key between the belt wheel and the PTO shaft that needs to be replaced? Thank you.
ANSWER : Most all riders have a safety seat switch now and they do malfuction alot. They are under the seat and are ez to replace most of the time. First look for a wire that is grounding due to rubbing a sharp object. That can be fixed with black tape

Good luck!!!

Engine dies if i engage blades or take my foot off the brake
ANSWER : You likely need to replace the brake switch, the seat switch can also cause the same problem. Most likely problem is the seat switch,i would try that first. The pto or the reverse switch can cause a shut down but not until you try to mow, seat switch is the most suspect.

Will only start and run in choked position, when throttle applied chokes out. If started with out choke and throttle position in low speed will start and run for 10 sec then like it runs out of gas.
