This is pretty much the same thing that I was told by a service shop. My primer bulb is built with a hole in the front center which I though was odd. the next season when I fueled it up the fuel poured out through the primer bulb hole. The guy told me that the bowl is similar to the drain in the toilet tank. If old fuel has dried up on the seal it allows the new fuel to flow through and run through the primer bulb. Of course, this is an indication that it was not properly drained at the end of the first season and naturally* voided the warranty (not a fan of TORO). He volounteered to flush the system for around 80 bucks. I found it ironic that my almost 400 dollar lawn mower lasted one season before needing an 80 dollar repair that is easily said to not be under warranty. In the meantime my now fifteen year old Murray with a B&S continues to run…sure it sometimes takes *more than one pull*, but the fuel doesn’t run right through it…fuel I left in during winter with a stabilizer in…hmmmm (did I mention…not a fan of TORO)

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A dirty filter chokes off air to the engine making it hard to start so check to see if yours needs to be replaced. If you need a new filter be sure to use the original manufacturers part or the correct Toro replacement. These can often be purchased at your local Toro dealer or a home improvement store.
There may be a problem with the fuel, the filters may need cleaning or replacing, or the spark plug may be bad. Moreover, if the recoil or electric starter is malfunctioning, the engine may not be spinning fast enough to turn over.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Your Mower Won`t Start:

Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.

If the engine will not crank, you likely have a problem with… Discharged / defective battery or faulty electrical connections. To address these issues, check the battery and charging system for problems. Faulty parts: potentially the safety interlocks, starter motor switch (open circuit) or solenoid.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
An airlock is one of the common causes why your mower won`t start after running out of fuel. An Airlock occurs when air replaces fuel in the fuel lines. As you refill your fuel tank, you could push the air towards your mower`s carburetor, which keeps the new fuel from reaching the engine.
If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
If a mower is hard to start, it may be the result of a dirty carburetor and/or a clogged air filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the carburetor and clean any dirt out of it with a rag. Clean the air filter or replace it if it`s disposable.
If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.
A dirty carburetor is one of the most common causes for a lawn mower not being able to start after sitting unused for months or years at a time.

My mower will start but won't stay running – Toro LX466 22HP Lawn Tractor 13RT61RH244
ANSWER : I am going to respond 2 times to this post. The first reply will be generic things to check.
First off check the oil level and make sure it is serviced to full.
If your having a lack of fuel (runing lean) you will need to check fuel flow at the carb fuel mainfold. It should fill a spray paint can lid in less than 10 seconds but teting flow rated of the main fuel line. If you have poor flow here… you need to check the fuel filter and the fuel tank outlet port for obstructions.

Good Fuel flow still shutting off…. remove the carb float bow and clean the debris from the bow’ and the treaded area where the fuel solenoid mounts Additionally you will have to again remove the main fuel line and spray carb cleaner in the float needle area to flush out any debris through the fuel hose connection.

For the second response I need to know which engine is installed on your mower by MODEL number if you can locate it. (there are 3 engines) At least try to find the engine model number. If you can not locate it Brand and HP of the engine (I assume 22 hp) Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

I have a toro gts 6.5hp model 20017. The enginer is overreving a lot. ANSWER : The way i set the govenor is, slacken the screw on the engine govenor arm, push the arm fully over to open the throttle wide open, now turn the actual govenor shaft within the arm in the same direction, fully retighten the govenor arm screw,

My toro 6.5 hp push mower (2010), has no fire to the plug. I have not abused it. i have a small yard and it just gets normal use. Now it won’t fire. I first changed the fuel and cleaned the carb thinking it was that crappy ethanol again. but i grounded out the spark plug and cranked it…no spark. I think it has to do with the lever you pull back to start it . they have some stupid complicated safety contraption that rides along the fly wheel when you pull back on the handle for starting and shutting off the engine. …it looks worn out already…like a mini brake pad. any ideas?…do i really have to replace this garbage every year or am i on the wrong path here?
ANSWER : Unhook your wire from the coil that goes to shut off mechanism, and see if you have spark then. the wire may be grounded out, or your coil might have took a ****

Toro recycler will start until primed gas is consumed.
ANSWER : I had similar problem and cleaned the spark plug and that seemed to have worked, but I think that may be a temporary fix because the engine still seems to be running unevenly. I feel that it must be a larger problem with the carb. If anyone can help this novice to adjust the carb or clean both carb and filter, or offer other solutions I would appreciate your assistance.
